George Moody Obituary

GEORGE ROLAND MOODY, beloved husband, brother, father, grandfather, and friend passed away suddenly on the 13th of June 2013, while playing golf with a dear friend. He will be remembered for his gentle presence, his kind and generous spirit, and his complete love and adoration for his wife, family, and friends.
Born in Houston on the 25th October 1943, to Florence and Dan Moody, George was a lifelong Houstonian. He attended Lanier Middle School where he met his future wife, Marsha Moore Moody. In those days, lockers and classes were assigned alphabetically. With his locker above hers and many classes together, they hit it off and their beautiful love story began. George then graduated from Lamar High School and Southern Methodist University where he was a member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity. George and Marsha married in 1963 and would have celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary this December.
George was preceded in death by his parents Florence and Dan Moody and his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Muriel and Ben H. Moore. He is survived by his devoted wife Marsha; his sons, George and wife Tricia, Mike and wife Laurie, and daughter Mary Lile and husband Tom. "Paw Paw" adored the Magnificent Seven grandchildren, Douglas Aaron Moody, Julia Patrice Moody, Michael Moore Moody, Jr., Jack Austin Moody, William George Moody, Thomas James Moody, and Caroline Helena Lile. He is also survived by his brother Dan McMillan Moody, Jr. and Lynn Van Eman; brother John Steven Moody and wife Eileen; aunt, Audrey Moody Ley; brothers-in-law Ben H. Moore, Jr. and wife Diane, William C. Moore and wife Ginny, and Robert L. Moore and wife Karen. Nieces and nephews include Dan M. Moody, III and wife Kim, John S. Moody, Jr. and wife Rachel, Joe L. Moody and wife Keri, and Dan T. Moody and wife Ann, Beau Moore, Brian Moore, Melanie Moore, Mary Moore, Michael Moore, Carl Moore and wife, Phoebe, Christine Moore Jarrett and husband, Jason, Elizabeth Moore Galtney and husband, Will, Laura Moore Wheless and husband, Robert, Rebecca Moore Pletz and husband, Greg, and Robert Moore Jr. and wife, Shelley, and many more cousins, and great nieces and nephews.
George enjoyed a long and successful career in commercial real estate spanning over 50 years. He built and developed many residential and commercial projects. He especially enjoyed working with his father and brothers in the early years and, most recently, with his nephews, Dan III, John Jr., Joe, and Dan T. He was recognized as Citizen of the Year in 1985 by Houston West Chamber of Commerce and was active in numerous business and professional associations where he made many friends.
George valued the importance of giving back to the community and dedicated himself to serving others. Some of the highlights of his service include Lifetime Director of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo where he served on the Steer Auction Committee and the International Committee; he also volunteered at the Gethsemane UMC Food Pantry, and mentored elementary-aged boys through Kid's Hope. He was a longtime active member of Memorial Drive Methodist Church before becoming an active member at St. Luke's United Methodist Church where he served on the Building Committee and the Board of Stewards. In 2000, he went on a Walk to Emmaus and enjoyed a weekly reunion group with his fellow Emmaus members.
George enjoyed having fun and living his life to the fullest. He was gifted with the ability to live ever-present in the moment while also planning the next fun activity whether it was a volunteer interest, a home-improvement project, dinner with friends, or time with the grandchildren. George loved to cook and provide for others; he was known for planning the next meal before the current one was finished. He liked to hunt and enjoyed a recent special trip to Argentina with his sons. He was a successful vegetable gardener and recently achieved Master Gardener status. George was an active member of Tejas Vaqueros for nearly four decades, which led to many life-long friendships and highly anticipated adventures. He loved spending time in Cat Spring with Marsha and relished the moments he spent there fishing and gardening with friends and grandchildren. All who knew him will dearly miss George.
Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family from five o'clock in the afternoon until eight o'clock in the evening on Monday, the 17th of June, in the library and grand foyer of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Drive in Houston.
The memorial service is to be conducted at eleven o'clock in the morning on Tuesday, the 18th of June, in the sanctuary of St. Luke's United Methodist Church, 3471 Westheimer Road in Houston, where the Rev. Bill Denham, Pastor of Caring Ministries, is to officiate.
Prior to Tuesday's service, the family will have gathered for a private interment at Memorial Oaks Cemetery in Houston.
In lieu of customary remembrances, please consider memorial contributions to Serenity Retreat, 3206 Shepherd Drive, Houston, TX 77018; St. Luke's United Methodist Church Building Fund, PO Box 22013, Houston, TX 77227-2013; or the charity of one's choice.

For decades George came to the Breakfast Club and below his unassuming, friendly personality was an expert in real estate. He shared it with us and helped to create our unique world of friendship and business combination. Each member contributed to the creation of what is now the Houston metropolitan area and countless buildings, parks, roads, homes are proud, but silent witnesses reminding us of their sacrifices, achievements, struggles, victories and defeats.
He has now joined the Heavenly Breakfast Club with its more than 40 members.
George, after you tell them about the new Houston real estate boom, remind them to keep the coffee warm, because we are all coming to join. Until then
rest in peace.

I will always remember George as a wonderful neighbor and friend with a fantastic ability to make everyone feel welcome. On Wednesday June 12th I came home from dinner and realized I was locked out of my house. George was the first one to run to my rescue to get my house unlocked. I gave him a great big hug and thanked him. Our little street was so blessed with his presence, he was the first to come to our aid when we needed something!! Gonna miss you George!!!!

I never had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Moody, but my little sister worked for him for a brief time, and it's clear from her description of him that he was a GOD FEARING MAN, and a great boss and husband.

George's obituary described him accurately as having "a gentle presence". I met him once while dropping into his office unannounced to attempt to collect some money. George himself came out to meet this intruder, whom he didn't even know, and kindly and gently resolved the situation. I've always remembered him as a gentleman with real class.

I didn't have the pleasure of knowing the personal side of George; but I did come to know one aspect of his character through managing a couple of his investment properties for him. He always struck me as a gentle caring person who would always put his Tenants best interests high up on the list of his priorities. A truly caring and genuine man. It was a great privilege to have worked with him.

I am so very sorry for the loss you have suffered.

May God's mercy be the salve on the wounds of your sorrow; may his grace bear you up until the passage of time provides you a sense of solace.

My brother Greg just sent me this, and looking through the photo gallery, I saw some photos that were reminiscent of when I used to come over and "babysit" for you from across the street in the early 70's. Marsha, you and George were always so wonderful to me.

It looks like you have had an amazing life together, and that your children have been blessed as well. You still have that warm, welcoming smile!

You may recall that my father died suddenly after leaving the golf course--he was just 42 years old and I was 10. I realize all too well how shocking an unexpected loss can be. But, at least he died while doing something he loved.

Please accept my sincerest sympathies.

My deepest sympathy is extended to Mrs. Moody and the entire Moody family. Mr. George was mentor to my son Memphis, through Kid's Hope as t Briarmeadow Charter School. My son was very fond of Mr. George and often spoke of their weekly visits, in detail. Mr. George learned of my son's love of mythology and bought him a book on mythology as a gift, he also learned of his wanting to go a live rodeo,Mr. George made that happen this year. He also learned about his love of sugar cookies with icing and with the help and love of Mrs. Moody, he also made that happen! He was certainly a wonderful and thoughtful man who made a great impact on a child's life and for all of these wonderful memories,THANK YOU MRS. MOODY AND FAMILY FOR SHARING HIM WITH US!

Our continued prayers are with you all.

(I have wonderful memories of sitting in a blind with George and Page Cagle at Rancho Tres Hijos!) I will greatly miss visiting with him, and I will hold him, his family, and friends in my thoughts and prayers.

Dearest George Moody family - I knew George through the annual Fred Fargo dove hunt every September which we both attended. Each year i looked forward to seeing George at the hunt because he treated me like i was his long lost best friend. We'd strike up conversations about family, friends, business and the hunt. He was always so kind and so very interesting and friendly. I will miss George at this September's hunt and each September thereafter. I am a better person for knowing George. My thoughts and prayers are with you all. God Bless you.

I did not know Mr. Moody, but my daughter, Hillary has been raised in funeral service all her life and I have never heard her speak of a person that she admired so much. Hillary met the Moody family thru the church and said what a great family they were and she was so honored to know them. Hillary always laughed at Marsha always trying to find Hillary a husband and none of them ever suited George. May God be with his family during this time and I hope they find peace knowing he is in the arms of God .

I loved talking to George. I always knew who was on the other line the minute I heard his voice. He was always in good spirits. I knew George by working for his brother-in-law Bill. George got me the George Strait tickets to the rodeo & I could never thank him enough. His words to me were "Anytime! I enjoy doing things for friends". What a blessing to have known him. Marsha, you're an angel & there was never any doubt how much George loved you. You feel the love between the two of you. My heart hurts for the family & the loss of such an amazing man but I have no doubt he is up in heaven & his light will shine forever. What a remarkable man! What a blessing to have known him!
