Obituary

George J. Popovich, 86, a longtime Duluth resident died Sunday, Jan. 27, 2008 in Bayshore Health Center. He was born in Duluth on Sept. 18, 1921 to Mike and Mary Popovich. George had attended Stowe School. He was a World War II Army veteran. George had been a Boy Scout Leader for many years. He was a member of St. Elizabeth's Catholic Church, a charter member of the VFW post 6320, and a member of the VFW post 137. He had worked at U.S. Steel for 32 years. George loved to listen to Slovenian music. He was preceded in death by his parents, and brothers, Raymond and Rudolph. He is survived by a daughter, Debra Ann Fontaine; sister, Mary (Robert) Sullivan of Stanton, Calif.; aunt, Ann Person of Los Angeles, Calif.; uncle, William (Ci) Pollock of San Diego, Calif.; two grandchildren, and a special friend, Mae Siltala. VISITATION:3 p.m. Thursday until the 4 p.m. Memorial Service in Hegstrom Family Funeral Home, Foley Chapel. 5405 Ramsey St. Military Honors will be accorded by the Duluth Combined Honor Guard. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery at a later date.

I remember George from when I was a boy growing up in Gary. He was a friend of my fathers. He always loved music and would show up where ever the Tamburitizans were playing. May you rest in peace George.
