It was a couple days before Christmas 1987. I was serving as a mid-level Foreign Service Officer in the NATO Affairs Office -- a notorious sweat shop even in the busy European Bureau at State. Most of us believed we were essential to the safety of the Western World, so had taken a pass on the Bureau Christmas party. All of a sudden in walks Secretary Shultz -- no entourage, no security. He gathers us around for a short, but heartwarming Christmas greeting and pep talk. Not sure I remember...
