George Harry Smee, three days shy of 99 years of age, passed onto his eternal home in heaven, June 11, 2017. He was born June 14, 1918 to the late George M. and Beulah R. Cameron Smee in Lewistown, Pennsylvania. He attended Lebanon College in Anneville, PA, where he obtained his bachelor degree in chemistry. In 1941 he moved to Charleston and was hired by FMC, thus beginning early career in chemistry which lasted throughout his life. Chemistry was always his love and life's ambition. When asked if there was something else he wanted to do his answer was always no. He was satisfied and happy with his job. Toward his last years as a Chief Head Chemist at FMC he was awarded by the U.S. Government a patent on a chemical he created and is used in many chemical companies today. The last years of his life he maintained good health which allowed him to take many trips to visit his relatives in Utah and Pennsylvania. Going back to Pennsylvania was a treat for him and to visit his mother and dad's grave who were killed in an automobile accident in 1967. He always reminisced about his childhood and all the good times he and his brother, Fred, shared growing up close to rivers. West Virginia became the state he wanted to become his permanent home and he became a true West Virginian. He loved it here. Throughout his life to the end, he had a zest for living and he had hoped to see 100 years of age. He was a die-hard sports fan of the WV Mountaineers and hardly missed watching a game. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Martha Runyan Smee; son, Larry Smee; daughter-in-law, Patty Smee; grandson, Aaron Smee; brother, Frederick Wilson Smee. George is survived by his faith-full friend and companion of 13 years, Beverly S. Blake and her son, Derrick Barnette of Cross Lanes; nieces, Sharon Harbour of Alum Creek, Connie Neal of Alum Creek, Jeannie Hall of Winfield, and Suzanne Rockstead of Tennessee; nephews, Donald Smee of Utah, and James Smee of British Columbia; cousin, JoAnne Sheehan of McCallisterville, Pennsylvania. We're all going to miss George, but he will be back with all his loved ones, the family he was first a part of. A Service to Honor the Life of George will be held at Noon on Wednesday, June 14, 2017 at Snodgrass Funeral Home , South Charleston with Pastor Richard Runyan officiating. Entombment will follow in Sunset Memorial Park, South Charleston. Family and Friends may visit one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
