Mad For His Grandmother
George Smith did a lot of things that would make a mother proud. He worked his way through college. He landed a good job as a senior business analyst at SunGard Asset Management. He even became the deacon of his local church.

But he was not a mama's boy. Instead, he would have been proud if you called him a grandma's boy.

Mr. Smith, 38, and his two sisters, Deborah Sallad and Christine Jackson, were raised by their grandmother, Marion Thomas, who held two jobs while making sure that the children went to church and Christian summer camps near their home in Phoenixville, Pa. Indeed, Mr. Smith was so devoted to his grandmother that he never wanted to leave, Mrs. Sallad said.

Even when he decided more than a decade ago to work in New York City, Mr. Smith chose to endure a rough commute — traveling 3 hours or so by train from his home in West Chester, Pa., on Sunday nights, staying in a corporate apartment during the week, then traveling back to Pennsylvania for the weekend — to be close to his grandmother.

"When he went to college, he told my grandma that I will always take care of you," Mrs. Sallad said about their grandmother, who is now 89 and battling uterine cancer. "He told her, 'You will have nothing to worry about.' "

Not sure what to say?

Georgie as we called him was one of my best friends and college roommate at DeSales University in PA. I still mourn the loss of a great human being but have fond memories of of driving from Coopersburg Pa to Phoenixville three nights a week to visit him and his Grndmother. After his death, I wrote a song about him, (Jazz Instrumental). Many years later, I just finished it, and I would love to give it to his family along with sharing it with the world. If any of his family members see this,...

You're presence has been missed everyday... It took awhile for me to accept that you were no longer here with us... After all, my big brother, the one who taught me basketball in the yard at Barkley, the one who told me all about the lightening bugs and then picked at me because I was fascinated with them, the...

Eric - since my NDE and knowing you are okay and embraced in God's love, I no longer feel the sadness and anger. Instead I remember us joking around in our cubicle at FTCI about high school and the silly cheers I remember doing (even though we didn't go to the same high school, you seemed to remember them too).
I remember your infectious laugh and your ability to cheer me up and everyone else too!
I still visit your grave in Limerick Gardens every 9/11; although that will change this...

we miss you

The sun also shines on you nicely

I made a heart around your name in the rain
