George Smith Obituary

George Monroe Smith WEST COLUMBIA - George Monroe Smith, 64, of West Columbia passed away Monday, September 26, 2016. Born June 30, 1952 in Richland County, he was the son of the late Pat Gaulden and Rubye Dillard Smith. George graduated from Airport High School in 1970 and from Georgia Southern University in 1975, with a degree in Outdoor Recreation. As a young man, he served as Deacon at First Baptist Church of West Columbia, where his family enjoyed many years of wonderfully close friends and fellowship. Later, George became a member of the First Baptist Church of Columbia, where he served on the Southern Baptist Convention's Committee on Committees. Following college, George devoted 28 years of his life working at the Wil Lou Gray Opportunity School in West Columbia, where he passionately chronicled the school's unique history under Founder, Dr. Wil Lou Gray. During those years, he traveled the state recruiting at-risk youth, introducing them to the school he loved, and giving them life-changing opportunities to complete their high school education. In later years, he enjoyed brief opportunities with the airlines and substitute teaching. He was blessed with a welcoming smile and contagious laugh; never meeting a stranger. He was an avid fan of Georgia Southern football, who loved to travel and read. Throughout life, George ardently tracked family genealogy, becoming a sought-after source for authors, documenting Civil War heritage that included his great-grandfather, a veteran of the Civil War, George Cleveland Smith, Sr. He enjoyed any opportunity for metal detecting to unearth precious historical objects. He was proud of his namesake, his uncle, Supreme Court Justice, George T. Smith of Atlanta, Georgia, becoming the fourth, now final, generation of George Smiths. Following family tradition, he loved a good dove hunt with his family in Camilla, Georgia and deer hunting and fishing with his brothers, Pat and John of Springdale. Recently, the three brothers, "joined at the hip" enjoyed a trip to South Dakota to pheasant hunt, where freezing temperatures and a white-out made for many laughs and a quick flight back home. He was a passionate ornithologist, particularly enamored with the Painted Bunting, enjoying pursuit of its winged flights and habitats in the southern part of the state. In 2011 with the unexpected loss of his sister, Marcia Anne Easler (Spartanburg), he cherished visits with his niece, Katie and her two beautiful daughters, Anna Gray and Emma. Birthday parties were not to be missed. George is survived by his two brothers, Pat G. Smith (Rosalie) and John T. Smith of Springdale, who will dearly miss their brotherly camaraderie; his niece, Katie Easier Prater (Ervin) of Inman and their precious daughters, Anna Gray and Emma; brother-in-law, Chris Easler of Spartanburg; her aunts, Daisy Boyd (Carroll) of Santuck, Joan Smith of Atlanta, Joan Dillard of Georgia uncle, Truett Smith (Glenna) of Elberton, GA; and many wonderful cousins. A Celebration of Remembrance service for George M. Smith will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, September 29, 2016 at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, West Columbia Chapel with interment to follow in the Garden of Prayer. The family will begin receiving friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Wil Lou Gray Foundation, 3300 West Campus Road, West Columbia, SC 29170 www.caughmanharmanfuneralhome.net.

George, I will miss you until my death. I love the many memories of summer at Grandma DIllard's house. Life was so much fun and differant then. I am so glad we got to be raised in the best days in America. I can still hear your laughter. It tugs at my heart! Time is passing for us all. I am glad God made us cousins and we took the time to be that! I will always love you! Emily

I remember playing two card games with George and my fellow dorm mates; Spades, and Killer. We would sometimes play until 2 am. He was kind, Christian, and not afraid to share his faith. I didn't appreciate George or his brother Pat when In college, but after we parted ways through graduation and went our separate ways, I missed both of them and when I was anywhere in or around Columbia, I would try to call or see George to find out how both were doing. I miss seeing or hearing from George now when i go through Columbia but I also know he is in heaven with Jesus Christ. I hope Pat is doing well, and Pat, if you read this, I love you as a friend and brother in Christ. Lyle

We are so sorry to hear of George's passing. We did not see it until Thursday night and hate we did not know. We had some great times with George many years ago through some business ventures and enjoyed traveling together. George had an infectious smile and was such a great guy! We have run into him a few times the past few years and he hadn't changed a bit! We have some wonderful memories of our times together. We are so sorry for your loss and our thoughts and prayers are with you all. I am sure George will be greatly missed!

We are so sorry to hear about George's passing. We didn't find the obituary until today and since it is too late to send flowers, in our Catholic tradition, we will have a Mass said for George here in Battle Creek.
George was such an outgoing, fun-loving person who made everyone feel welcome and comfortable. He will be sorely missed by all who knew him.
Sorry to send our condolences this way but I lost my address book and no longer have your addresses.
Love and prayers,

George my friend and my hanging buddy, I will miss you more then words can say..I will miss getting up at 5:00am just to meet you at 6 to go on one of our many adventures. I will never forget the time we went to see the alligators and that baby alligator was beside me, you didn't say anything not one word, when I turned and saw that alligator beside me, I ran straight out of my shoes tearing them up, you laugh so hard.. three years later you're still laughing at me. George when I was sick you would come sit with me to keep me company, I remember my last treatment you play the song you can ring my bell which represented my last chemo treatment. That will always be our song. I will miss you my friend..I love you George, you will always have a special place in my heart..Keep them laughing in heaven like you kept us laughing hear on earth. RIP my friend.

Pat and John, I am heartbroken to hear this. Pat, I loved you and George as brothers. Many times when I was in Columbia, passing through, or nearby, I made it a point to call George. I always asked how you were doing. I have always, and will always think fondly of both of you and our days at AC and will miss George tremendously. I pray that God will be with you and the family during this time of loss. The one comfort we have is that George is in Heaven with Jesus Christ and reunited with his family. God bless all of you and I will be praying.

My favorite memory of George is coming to Grandma Dillards' house in Monterey,Tn. We played every minute possible ending the week stay with a talent show where George tap danced in his rubber boots. Us cousins will never forget Table Top Rock, the giant foot, shandy train and many more memories. Then a few years passed and we took it to adulthood by having yearly reunions at Cumberland Mountain State Park in Crossville,Tn where some of our kids had talent shows and Katie tap danced in real tap shoes. We did take the time to be family and no one can take that away. Pat,John,Katie and family, I am sorry I couldn't come to SC because of illness but my heart is with you all. George will live in my heart forever. I am so glad God made us cousins. Praying for you all. Love, Emily Dillard Harris

Dear Pat and John:

I am deeply saddened to hear of George's passing. He will be missed by so many of the people who's lives he touched.

I was very fortunate to see him in recent years when flying out of Columbia Metropolitan Airport and was able to stay in touch with him on FaceBook.

I have always had a deep admiration for George and your entire family. I cherish the fond memories of our time at First Baptist of West Columbia, Royal Ambassadors and our love for softball.

Each of you will be in my prayers during this difficult time.

I met George while working at the airport. I hopped on as a third wheel with he and Tangla Jones to various cities and attractions in South Carolina. We went to Savannah, Charleston, Beaufort and many more little towns. The one trip I enjoyed most was Daufuskie Island on a quest to see the Bald Eagle nesting. We also went on an adventure looking for his precious Painted Bunting bird. George's laugh was huge and he had a wonderful since of humor. He cared deeply for his friends and I am privileged to being one of them. I'm going to miss you George, God Bless

To Pat and John: I was so sad to hear about George. We made so many memories back in the day in our Youth Group at FBWC. My husband and I saw George in July in Lowes. George always had that sweet smile and unforgettable laugh. I'll always remember that. He is now in the arms of Jesus and is celebrating with your Dad, Mom and Marcia. Love you. ❤

I am deeply saddened by seeing that George has passed on. He was a dear friend of mine and my family. One of the things I will remember about George was that he never let go of his principles. He was one that let his faith guide him throughout his life. Jesus has readied George's mansion in Heaven. Well done, God's good and faithful servant.
