NEW LONDON--George A. Tracy, 78, of New London, N.H., died on Saturday, September 8, 2007 at New London Hospital.

Born in Halifax, Nova Scotia on April 11, 1929 to Ida Mae (Spruin) Tracy and Albert Henry Tracy, Mr. Tracy was educated in the Halifax public schools. He went on to study and earn degrees at the University of King's College and at Dalhousie University in Halifax. In later years, he furthered his education at colleges in the United States and in the United Kingdom.

Between 1950-52, Mr. Tracy taught at King's College School in Windsor, Nova Scotia. He then acquired a position as a teacher at St. Paul's School in Concord, N.H. where he taught Greek and Latin as well as Shakespearean studies for the remaining forty years of his career. Following retirement from St. Paul's in 1992, he and his wife took up residence in New London, N.H.

A student of languages and literature all his life, Mr. Tracy went on to take and give courses in the Institute for Life Long Education at Dartmouth in Hanover and with Adventures in Learning in New London.

That Mr. Tracy only answered an inborn and insistent calling to teach would be admitted and proclaimed by anyone who met him. He passionately loved both the music and structure of language and communicated these passions to his students--colleagues and friends, as well--in ways that touched them deeply. An actor and orator of uncommon ability, Mr. Tracy used these skills to bring to life subjects considered ancient by others. As teacher, coach, colleague, husband, father, grandfather and friend, Mr. Tracy had a profound impact upon the lives of many people.

He is survived by his wife of fifty years, Mary Rand Tracy and their two daughters, Nora Tracy Phillips, her husband, Timothy C. Phillips and their children, Jonathan and Susannah Tracy Phillips of Wellesley, Mass. and Paula Tracy, her husband, Thomas W. Cowie, and their daughter Eliza Rand Cowie of Rumney, N.H. He was predeceased in 1990 by his son, Jonathan F. Tracy

A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, September 29, 2007 at 2 o'clock in the Chapel of St. Peter and St. Paul at St. Paul's School in Concord.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made either to the Norris Cotton Cancer Center at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center, c/o Development Office at DHMC, 1 Medical Center Drive, Lebanon, N.H. 03756 or to the charity of one's choice.

Chadwick Funeral Services of New London is in charge of the arrangements.

Not sure what to say?

I first met George at St. Paul’s School during the summer session (Advance Studies Program), during 1973. Technically, I was on the faculty although I was only Chapel Organist and my duties entailed playing for four morning services a week.

My first interaction with George is the one that I remember most vividly. I was in the faculty lounge, seated at a table reading, when George came over and compared an original and a copy he had just made on the Xerox machine. He marveled at how...

Offering our deepest condolences during this difficult time.
