To the Umstead family.

George was a great friend of my father Larry who introduced me now 25 years ago when I joined Nisi Prius. He was a kind, generous and talented man. I will never forget his kind spirit and great softshoe. My prayers are with all of you.

Serjeant Um, you were one of a kind. The skits you wrote, with Serjeant Jones, were always the highlight of the Court of Nisi Prius show (the Grand Assize). Clever, funny, with a coherent story line, and always incorporating the latest hit melody into your skit. And of course what no-one will forget are the years of your dance routine with Serjeant Kidder. The one in particular which I shall never forget is the two of you as Tweedle-dum and Tweedle-dee!Show stoppers all.

Chris and family,my prayers are with you during this time

To the Umstead Women: I was so sorry to hear of your Dad's passing. In fact, your dad was such a big man in character, the thought of him ever dying never crossed my mind! I thought he would live forever. His spirit will live on in me forever, and I'm sure there are many, many others who feel the very same way. He was a great man, and I knew from the very first time I met him that he loved you all with all of his being.
