George Walmsley Obituary

George Lee Walmsley, M.D.
1926-2015
George Lee Walmsley, M.D., 88, of Baytown, TX was born November 2, 1926, in New Bedford, MA and departed this life on Saturday, June 6, 2015. He was preceded in death by his father, George Walmsley; his mother, Mildred Bosworth Walmsley; and brother, Thomas Read Walmsley. He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Betty Bob Storm Walmsley of Houston; his four children and their spouses, George Storm Walmsley, Robert Phipps Walmsley, McKim Walmsley Rowe, and Caroline Walmsley Zeringer; 11 grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren; and his brothers, John Gardner Walmsley and James Albert Walmsley, M.D., as well as many nieces and nephews.
Dr. George Lee Walmsley was a 1944 graduate of Robert E. Lee High School where he was an All-American football star and was inducted into the Texas High School Football Hall of Fame in Waco. He received his BS degree in Biology from Rice University in 1948. George was also a football standout at Rice where as a freshman he won the George Martin Award and was inducted into the Rice Athletic Hall of Fame. He was a proud member of the 1946 Orange Bowl team that beat Tennessee. Dr.
Walmsley received his Doctorate of Medicine from the University of Texas Medical School at Galveston in 1954. He also served in the United States Air Force as a flight surgeon. Dr. Walmsley's decision to set up his Family Practice in Baytown was inspired by the love and support he received from the community and church of his youth. His response to this outreach was to serve his community and church in a variety of ways. He was one of the organizers of the Gulf Coast Hospital and practiced medicine for 40 years. After retirement George enjoyed his other love of gardening and spending time with family at Lagniappe, the bay place he and his wife built over 50 years ago on Trinity Bay. There, he leaves a piece of himself for generations to come.
His family will receive friends at Navarre Funeral Home Tuesday from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. There will be a private graveside service Wednesday, June 10, 2015, with a Celebration of Life to follow at 2:00 p.m. at Trinity Episcopal Church, 5010 N. Main St., Baytown, TX 77521.
In lieu of flowers please consider the American Heart Association, or the Trinity Episcopal Church Endowment Fund or the Sterling Municipal Library.
