For all those close to George, please accept my condolences. I'm sure there will be many people who remember him well, esp. if they're outside enjoying the natural areas he helped to preserve.

I only met George for one day, but the time was so special and bonding I returned home and told my wife I met the most wonderful guy today. To see his picture in the Democrat brought back fine memories of that day. We have many of the same likes and concerns for this world that at times appears to be careening out of control. Tears in my eyes too. George was a great mentor to me. I could listen for hours about his stories of special places and he took me to a lot of them. One of our favorite places was the eastern edge of Kississmee Prairie, Adam's Ranch and Rhode Ranch. That old FL is such a treasure. I also recall the hours of combing for RCWs in the longleaf stands. I think those trees talked to George. Please let me know if there will be a legacy or memorial fund for him through Audubon or other conservation...

My fondest memory of George was the day we spent on the Latt Maxcy property looking for unexploded ordinance that had been dropped as part of the Avon Park bombing range. The land acquisition was on the IITF/ FDEP agenda for approval by Governor Chiles and the Cabinet, as happens someone spoke and talked about the history of the property including its use as a practice bombing range and concerns about unexploded bombs and public safety.
