Byles-Groton Memorial Home - Groton Obituary

Georgeann Gibson, of Groton, passed away August 27, 2025, at home following a lengthy illness.

Georgeann was born, May 16, 1941 in Rye, NY, daughter of George and Mary Evelyn Drinkwater Gibson.  She graduated from Fairfield University and loved being a mighty force as a high school history teacher in Stamford CT for many years.  In addition to spending time with family, GG loved taking care of her cats, reading historic novels and sitting on the beach at Shennecossett with family and friends.  She moved to Groton in 2016 to be closer to her sister Peggy Callahan.

She is survived by her nephews, William and his wife Beverly of Groton, CT, Peter and his wife Pam of Concord, MA, and Richard and his wife Linda of Charlotte, NC; and her two great nieces, Sydney and Nina Callahan.

Georgeann was preceded in death by her sister Peggy Callahan and her nephew Henry, “Hank” Callahan.

The family would like to thank Vivian and the Care at Home agency for taking good care of Georgeann in the last 2 years.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, October 10th at 10:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church, 52 Sacred Heart Dr., Groton. Interment will be in Colonel Ledyard Cemetery. Donations in her memory may be directed to the Child and Family Agency, P.O. Box 120 New London, CT 06320, www.childandfamilyagency.org.

Not sure what to say?

I remember Ms. Gibson fondly. She already knew me when she became my teacher because my dad taught at Stamford High with her. She asked my father to speak to our class about his time serving in Vietnam. It was the first time I had ever heard him speak about it. What a gift it was to learn about that time in my dad's life! I will be forever grateful to her for that opportunity and for opening that door. She also fostered my love of history and I became a history major in college. Rest easy,...

Thoughts and prayers are with Richard & Linda and the family.
Dean and Diep Tong.

I knew Georgeann for many years through St. Maurice Church in Stamford. She was a very nice person who always had a smile on her face and kind words for everyone. Sending my condolences to her family. Linda Nardozza

My sympathy to the family of Ms. Gibson, who was my history teacher in the mid 1970's at Stamford High.

In loving memory of Georgeanne, our longtime neighbor at Heywood Heights in Stamford. Her warmth and presence enriched our community, and she will be deeply missed. May she rest in eternal peace.
