Gerald R. Armenta

Gerald Raymond Armenta of San Luis Obispo passed away Monday, Sept. 9, 2013, with family by his side, at his home in San Luis Obispo. Gerald and his twin sister, Geraldine were born in July 1924 in San Luis Obispo to Irene and Tobin Armenta. He attended school in San Luis Obispo. Gerald joined the U.S. Army in 1943 during World War II and was stationed in New Guinea. He was an auto mechanic and also a guard for World War II prisoners. Gerald received the following medals: Good Conduct, Asiatic Pacific Campaign, America Campaign World War II Victory and Philippine Liberation Ribbon. As a young man, Gerald worked on his father-in-law's farm, and also did labor and construction. He then worked for the San Luis Obispo Water Department for 20 years - he retired in 1984. He loved sports, fishing and camping at Lopez Lake with his grandchildren. He loved family vacations at Bass Lake. Gerald is survived by his wife, Belen Armenta; daughters Barbara Navoni (Paul) of Atascadero and Tina Meehan (Eugene) of Templeton; stepdaughter, Veda Barre of Atascadero; grandsons Manuel Perez of Grover Beach and Anthony and Navoni and Andrew Navoni of Atascadero; and several step-grandchildren, nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his sister, Geraldine Chaney; mother, Irene Garcia and stepfather Del Garcia; and father, Tobin Armenta and former wife, Judy Mathews. A Mass for Gerald will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 17, 2013, at the Old Mission Church in San Luis Obispo.
