I was just a kid when I knew Gerry- about 16 years old. But that's a very impressionable age and moments with him are indelible. So much so that over 60 years later, after a life in Europe, Indonesia and Hawaii, and returning here to California, I searched him on Google and quickly got in touch. Gerald has entered Great Peace, but with his passing something large has been ripped out of my soul. He was our teacher, who conceived and started our class, eventually inspiring us to carry on when he himself could no longer do so. And he was our dear friend, immensely gifted, with an awe-provoking grasp of history, cultures, and languages. My only consolation is in knowing that wherever he would go, he would share his rich world with those he met, and he would never turn down an opportunity...

My life was so much richer just having known Gerald. The image I choose to remember of him was the day before he passed away, he winked at me and blew me a kiss as I was leaving his hospital room. He will always be the giver of love and light to me. Gerald often called me "Alexander" after Alexander the Great.
