Gerald “Jerry” T. Conlon, son of Charles and Florence (Daly) Conlon, was born September 15, 1932, in Great Oak Township near Ayrshire, Iowa. He received his early education from Sacred Heart Catholic School and graduated from Ayrshire High School in 1951.
After graduation, Gerald served in the United States Army during the Korean War for two years where he was awarded The National Defense Service Medal. He was honorably discharged on March 21, 1955.
On June 19, 1965, Gerald was united in marriage to Irene Glackin in Spencer, Iowa. They were blessed with seven children.
Gerald was a farmer all his life and loved being a farmer. He also worked for the Ayrshire Telephone Company, was a seed corn salesman, and was a crop adjuster throughout his life.
He was a part of the American Legion, Ruthven-Ayrshire school board and Ruthven Co-op Oil Company board, was a fourth degree Knight of Columbus, and a lifelong, faithful member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Ayrshire and most recently, Holy Family Parish. Gerald always made sure his family made it to Mass.
Gerald loved square dancing with Irene, spending time with his family, raising his kids, and watching his grandchildren’s activities. He was a husband and a father first and foremost. Although he was a quiet man, when he spoke, he spoke volumes. A look or a grunt, and he had the attention of his kids.
Gerald passed away Monday, July 18, 2022, at the Ruthven Community Care Center in Ruthven, Iowa, at the age of 89. He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Gerald Thomas, Jr.; sisters, Mary Catherine Foxhoven and Joan Nichols; and stepmother, Mary (Hoffman) Conlon.
He is survived by his wife, Irene of Ruthven, Iowa; two sons, David (Jill) Conlon of Ruthven, Iowa and Larry (Vicky) Conlon of Ruthven, Iowa; four daughters, Theresa (Andy) Kirsis of Urbandale, Iowa, Karen (Brent) Reinders of Colleyville, Texas, Kathy (Jim) Lappe of Bondurant, Iowa, and Diane (Chris) Parham of Golden, Colorado; fourteen grandchildren; his sister, Judy Weis of Emmetsburg, Iowa; as well as many other relatives and friends.
