Chadwick Funeral and Cremation Service, LLC - New London Obituary

Gerald “Jerry” Martin died peacefully in his sleep at his home in Bradford on January 10. He was 93. Jerry was born May 4, 1930 in Newport, NH, where he grew up with his brothers, Jim and Donald. The three boys were the sons of Herbert and Harriet Martin, longtime proprietors of Martin’s Hardware.

Upon graduation from high school, Jerry spent a postgraduate year at Cushing Academy before becoming a Military Police Officer in the U.S. Air Force. Stationed throughout the world, Jerry was especially proud to be named Airman of the Month while in Michigan and often recalled his time spent in Morocco. After completing his service, Jerry returned to Newport and worked at his family’s hardware business.

Jerry met his wife, Jacquelyn Elliott Martin, at Mount Sunapee and the couple wed in 1959, upon which he moved to Bradford. He could barely keep up with her on the slopes, but in life they were married for 43 years, raising a son and a daughter.

Jerry will be fondly remembered for his years at Merrimack Farm and Country Store and at Henniker Farm and Garden where his whistling always filled the air. He also operated Martin Energy, delivering warmth and stories to people throughout the region.

Jerry is predeceased by his parents and brothers, his wife, and his daughter, Samantha Anne Martin.

Surviving family members include a number of beloved nieces and nephews, and his son Gerald Harris Martin, II and his partner Duncan S. Snitkin.

A Gathering of Remembrance will be held in the Friendship Room of the Bradford Community Church on Saturday, February 3 at 1:00 p.m.

Not sure what to say?

Jay, I’m so sorry for your loss. Our introduction to your family started sometime around 1979, when Paul, Rachel, and Charlie took me and Ian for a walk through the woods and got completely lost. I think your dad picked us up and called our parents to pick us up. I remember your dad’s prescence at the Feed store throughout my childhood. Jerry was such a character and icon of Bradford. Peace and hugs my friend❤

I will forever deeply treasure the quality times I spent with Jerry over the years, often sharing many intimate, true stories concerning our colorful, local history, while speaking positively about the present and cautiously about the future. Jerry possessed an unusual combination of many fine qualities of a life well-lived including integrity, wisdom, courage, natural curiosity, fairness, humor, patience, accountability, selflessness, positive attitude, a strong work ethic and a deep respect...

Jay, I'm sending all my love to you and Duncan. Thinking of your dad and spending time with your family when I was younger puts a smile on my face every time. His stories and love for life and family were beautiful. May he rest in peace and be overjoyed at reuniting with Jackie and Sam.

We met Jerry not long after moving to Bradford. When passing by while out on our walks with the dogs, Jerry would often be out working in the yard. He would always stop what he was doing and come over to chat with us.
We will always remember him driving in his yellow jeep wearing his cowboy hat! Our sincere condolences to Jay, Duncan, and the rest of his family. RIP Jerry.

He was a gracious, generous, and loving man. Was always kind to this "goat lady". May he now rest in the arms or Jesus.
Peace and good to his remaining family.
