Jerry Phillips
I never knew Jerry personally, I never met him, never knew he even existed until late in his life. But I started to hear little things about him... finding out he'd been ill and I heard of his hospital stays. I started to learn what kind of man he was and how much he meant to his loved ones. I could tell so much by the heartfelt words coming from a daughter, I felt her happiness, sorrow and pain. Happiness as Dad seemed to make a recovery and I felt more joy upon her recollections of him, precious times spent with her father. The recovery did not last and I felt a sorrow only a loving daughter could possibly have. She asked everyone to pray for her father. And the pain was so evident when the saddest of days came to pass. Starr, it's the memories of him that will sustain you, always keep a picture of him in your mind and on your mantle. Just think of him when your sad, and whisper to him that you love him, then listen quietly, you'll hear him tell you, “ I love you too”. Just like he always did.

I would give anything for just one hour more with my Dad. To right some wrongs and let him know how very much I admire him. Unselfish in all that he has done for me and my brothers and sisters.
I am a LUCKY man to have had such
an amazing and wonderful Dad.
I understand now what "Luck of the Irish" means and it makes me smile and
when Irish eyes are smiling....
I love and miss you Dad with all of my heart, 528.

My thoughts are with my dear friend Melissa and her family. Years ago I had to go to court in Roseville and Jerry saw me when I walked in. We chatted and I told him I had a court date for a ticket for expired plates. He walked me into the courtroom and stayed in there with me. When I went in front of the judge he asked me if I had gotten my tabs renewed yet and I said yes...and proceeded to pull them out of my purse. The judge looked at me like I was a total moron and said Why aren't they on your car?!?! Jerry laughed so hard at me and got the judge to laugh too. He wound up getting everything waived for me, then he walked me out and helped me put them on my car...shaking his head and laughing at me the whole time. Gave me a big bear hug and sent me on my way!
Just wanted to share a story about what a helpful, funny, and loving guy Jerry was.
Melissa, I love you! You, Starr and Billy were lucky to have a daddy like him in your life. And mom...you are an incredible woman for standing by his side the way you did. Now he is comfortable and at peace. Be strong and love each other.

My heart goes out to his family, in this time of grief. I was acquainted with Jerry through MACEO, the Michigan Association of Code Enforcement Officers; Jerry was a founding member. He was always a lively contributor at our educational conferences, and I appreciated his quick wit at networking sessions, and professional contributions, at our round table discussions. He was always willing to give the benefit of his experience, when from other communities questions arose, and was helpful to me on more than one occasion. I had Bell's Palsy after Jerry did, and he was compassionate and empathetic, when I asked about his recovery. I was just asking MACEO members about his whereabouts and well-being about a month ago; I wish now, I'd made a serious effort to get a call through to him. Peace, brother, on your journey home. See ya on the other side.

I never had the opportunity to meet Jerry, but I have to say he raised three wonderful kids who thought the world of him. I know through their words and actions that he was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather. Rest in peace, you are home now.
