Not sure what to say?

I was a student of Dr. Poe at the University of Portland in 1973-74. I learned many things from him that year. I send my condolences to his family and hope for them to be comforted.

Dr. Poe was an amazing teacher. I, unfortunately, was not an amazing student, but he was still able to get through to me in a way few ever could. He was notoriously fiery in his approach, because he not only expected the best out of his students, he demanded it. He held us accountable and did not allow us to make excuses for poor preparation. Life doesn't give you a free pass, and neither did Dr. Poe. He prepared his students for life in and outside of music. As demanding as he could...

Dr. Poe was a wonderful teacher that taught me so much more than how to play a couple of instruments and read music. He taught me responsibility and prepared me for life beyond high school. He was my greatest teacher. I never even knew this page existed until today, which is a testament to how much he impacted my life. Even though it has been 3 years, I still think about him. I thought enough about him today to Google him and run across this and leave a note. I miss you Doc.
May God be...

Dr. Poe was an amazing music teacher and even better band director. He taught me so much more than music - discipline, determination and patience to practice until we got it right. God bless to all his family and friends.

Praying for God's peace for Dr. Poe's family during this time. I was a member of the Gator band when he first arrived at UF and had a great time under his direction. He will surely be missed.

Doc will forever be an important part of the Lovell children's lives and educations. He loved music and he imparted that to his students. Thank you for sharing this awesome man with so many Alachua County young people. I was honored to work as a band booster and help head up the Band Boosters at HHS for a time while he was there. Our family has many wonderful memories from our years together. God bless all the family during this time of loss.
