Wonderful and beloved husband, father, uncle, grandparent, great-grandparent and mentor/employer/friend to hundreds of family members, friends, and colleagues throughout his lifetime, Gerald Emmett Roth, 89, passed away in San Diego, CA. on November 10th.  He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Elaine Roth; daughter Colleen Jiron of Colorado; sons Robert and Gerald Roth of California, stepsons Doug and Steve Miller of California, as well as their children and grandchildren. He is predeceased by his first wife of 27 years, Shirley Ann Culumber of Decatur, Ill., son David Roth of Reno, NV., his brothers William and Thomas Roth, and his sister Florence Edmunds, all of Illinois.

Gerald was born on October 22nd, 1929 in Taylorville, Illinois, to Emmett John Roth and Geneva Vollmer. He worked on the family farm until graduating from Blackburn College in Carlinville, IL, and later Illinois Wesleyan University in Bloomington. He began his career in Data Processing with State Farm Insurance of Bloomington. After pursuing this career path in Tacoma, WA and Marin County, CA, he founded a successful computer-onto-microfilm service center in San Francisco (Micro-Datamation), which he subsequently sold in order to establish a specialty lighting mail order/retail business, Bulbman Inc, of Reno, NV. Bulbman remained a profitable, thriving enterprise doing business around the world and with a successful tenure of over 30 years. Gerald retired in 1996 after moving to Las Vegas, NV.

Throughout his life, Mr. Roth exemplified his beliefs in compassion, common sense and civility to all persons. He was among the first small-business owners to establish an employee stock ownership program, to hire handicapped individuals, and to give everyone an equal chance at learning and advancement. He worked tirelessly to teach and provide positive work environments, fair livelihoods and humanitarian benefits for his employees. He also was an avid letter-writer, relentlessly corresponding to government leaders when he saw fraud, greed and corruption tainting their decisions.

Memorial services will be held for the family at a date and time to be announced. In lieu of any gifts or flowers, donations may be sent to the Alzheimer's Research and Prevention Foundation at PO Box 30783, Tucson, Arizona 85751-0783, or online at:  https://arpf.donorshops.com/product/Tribute/tributedonation.php.

Mr. Roth was an extraordinary human being, loved and admired by all who knew him. His radiance will continue to shine in our hearts and our lives.

Not sure what to say?

When I think of you, I remember a special day we spent together as a family sight-seeing at the Red Rocks State park, your easy-going nature and how you always wanted to show us a good time when we visited you. (I love how you made a point of opening all the doors for the ladies :-) ...a special touch of class! You always made us feel very special. Thank you for being a good father to my wonderful husband, always grateful. I am sorry I didn't get to spend more years with you Jerry, and I will...

Kindness, generosity, integrity all terms that exemplify the life of Uncle Jerry. He will be remembered in the prayers of all who knew him. His warmth and caring ways are the examples for those who follow in his footsteps. He will be missed by his loving Sister in Law, Kathryn Roth (Wife of Brother Bill) and all his nieces and nephews.

Dad, I call myself a writer, but now I am sorting through and discarding words that fall short, until reminiscence takes over. I reflect back to my ninth year of life, on a late autumn visit to the farm, your homestead. You did me the great honor of asking me to go hunting with you. Shy about being singled out from my three brothers and five male cousins, I chided you, Youre really going to shoot those poor little quail? Well, yes, arent you? I only want to shoot pictures with my camera. You...

I did not have the pleasure of knowing Mr. Roth personally, but I do know his daughter Colleen who loves him dearly. The qualities I read about her father shine through her now, and I hope and presume that the influence of his soul also shines in others who have met him. This is the best legacy.
