I wish to extend my sincere condolences to the Niewood family. I first heard Gerry play at the old Gulliver's in West Paterson back in the '80's with his band "Timepiece" and on many occasions at Trumpets in Montclair. He was a very talented and versatile musician and substituted occasionally in the horn section of Diane Moser's Composers Big Band. He will be greatly missed both by jazz fans and musicians, alike.

Whenever we went to a Chuck Mangione concert we waited anxiously to hear Gerry play. What a talent! Our contact with him was minimal; backstage to say congratulations and how much we loved his music. But our sense of knowing him was deep. Our condolences go to his family and his extended family whom we know feel this untimely loss as much as we do. Don and Hannah King

To the Niewood Family. Gerry grew up with my family back in the 50's. He was a Musicians Musican. I was totally shocked to hear about his untimely death.. Gerry went to Franklin High School along with my 2 older brothers and my sister.
May you find comfort to know that if Gerry was a beliver in our Lord Jesus Christ that he is now in his presence.
My sympathy to his wife and his son whom I am sure will carry on his legeacy

My thoughts and prayers are with the Niewood family during this painful time. I respected Gerry not only because of his talent, but more importantly, because of his healthy ego. He sent out such beautiful, peaceful vibes to the world. All of us who work in radio have felt this loss, not to mention our listeners, many who are fans of Gerry. I was glad that I was able to chat with him after hearing his performance, several months ago here in Rochester.
