Reiff Funeral Home - Epworth Obituary

Gertrude C. (Stoffel) McDermott, 96, of Riverbend Retirement Community in Cascade, Iowa and formerly of Epworth, Iowa, passed away Thursday, June 28, 2018 at Shady Rest Care Center in Cascade, IA.


Friends and relatives of Gertie may call from 2 to 8 p.m., Sunday, July 1, 2018 at the Reiff Funeral Home in Epworth, Iowa, where a wake service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friends may also call after 9 a.m., Monday at the funeral home.


Mass of Christian burial for Gertie will held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, July 2, 2018 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Epworth, Iowa with Rev. Michael Schueller presiding. Burial will be held in St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Epworth, Iowa.


Gertie was born October 10, 1921 in Balltown, Iowa, daughter of Frank and Josephine (Leick) Sigwarth. She received her education from St. Francis of Assisi School in Balltown, Iowa.  She was united in marriage to Francis “Rex” Stoffel on January 14, 1947 at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Balltown, IA.  He preceded her in death on April 26, 1970.  She was then united in marriage to Orland J. McDermott on April 24, 1976 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Epworth, Iowa.  He preceded her in death on August 29, 1996.


She was a member of St. Patrick’s Parish, its Rosary Society and Prayer Shawl Ministry in Epworth, IA. She was a homemaker and was later active as a community volunteer, she volunteered her time at the Northeast Iowa Area Agency on Aging.  She was the recipient of the                                                 award.  Gertie loved to spend time and visit with her family and friends.  She also enjoyed playing cards, sewing, crocheting and gardening.


She is survived by her six children, Betty (Bill) Mausser of Epworth,IA, Marilyn (Dan) Mason of Rainy River Ontario, Canada, Darlene Meyer of Cascade, IA, Margie (Mike) Kane of Epworth, IA, Rick Stoffel of Bankston, IA and Kevin Stoffel of Superior, Co.; one daughter-in-law, Karen Stoffel of Dubuque, IA; 13 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; 7 step-great grandchildren; seven siblings, Irene Sigwarth, Mildred Schromen both of Dubuque, IA, Mary Even of Key West, IA,  Leon Sigwarth, Herb Sigwarth and Joe Sigwarth all of Balltown, IA, Wilmer Sigwarth of Savage, MN; three sisters-in-law, Theresa Campbell Hansen of Dubuque, IA, Rosemary Ploessl of Holy Cross, IA and Joann Klein of Balltown, IA.


She was also preceded in death by her parents; one son, Gerald Stoffel, one son-in-law, Dennis Meyer; one brother, Francis Sigwarth; one sister,  Viola Sigwarth; nine brothers-in-law, Eldon Schromen, Bob Even, Leonard Stoffel, Merlin Stoffel, Bernard Stoffel, Bill Campbell, Jim Hansen, Donald Ploessl and Raymond Klein.
