16 October 2019: I was very fond of Gilbert and I miss him. His memory will always be with me.

29 December 2014

I met Gil and Mary for the first time in 2011. Gilbert was a friend and colleague who helped me in my career beyond words. I will always remember him for his kindness and modesty and wisdom. He was an exceptional scholar and an amazing human being.

I would also express my special thanks to Gilbert Baumslag:
not only for being one of the organizers and a coauthors (surely responsible for my Erdös number),
but above all for his help and encouragement, more generally, for the role he played for me 40 years ago.
A long time ago,
but it feels like yesterday – so this must be a really important event,> and I can't resist to let it pass in review:

Gilbert,...

I was very fond of Gilbert and am shocked by his unexpected death. He was a lively and entertaining companion as well as a very generous host. I admired his energy, his robust sense of humour, his liberal beliefs and actions. We shared a love of mathematics and, like many many others, I will miss him a lot.

I had the pleasure of meeting Gilbert and his lovely wife on Nantucket back in the early eighties. They welcomed me into their home as if they had known me forever. Such incredible people and memories I will cherish forever. Rest in peace Gilbert.

I was working in New York having been a lackluster undergraduate , and took some courses at NYU since my company paid the tuition. It was my great fortune to take a course from Gilbert and to sign on with him to do a master's thesis. His nurturing and boundless energy brought out whatever talent I had, and I became his second PhD student.I wouldn't have been a mathematician without him, and am forever grateful.
