Gilbert Glass Obituary

Gil was born November 3, 1927, in his family home on Route 28A on the “South Side” of the Ashokan Reservoir. He was the youngest of three boys born to Herbert Sr. and Elsa (née Schura) who owned the adjacent General Store and gas station. He had a special friendship with his older brothers, Herbert Jr. (Viola) and Everett “Buddy” (Doris) both of whom have preceded him in passing.Gil developed a love for cars early on in life. His first car was a Model T, put together with bits and pieces he acquired—which brings a chuckle to anyone who views an old photo of him proudly sitting behind the wheel. At a young age, Gil met his future wife, Patricia, daughter of tavern owners of “Marge and Tom’s” (now the Reservoir Inn) just a few miles from his family’s home and business. They soon eloped and began their 72-year marriage.Wherever a beautiful soul has been, there will be a trail of beautiful memories and so it was with Gil. He is remembered for being larger than life, and for loving life. Gil was a storyteller who enjoyed recalling his younger days as a volunteer fireman for Spillway District 3, and his county job plowing the roads of West Hurley. He was also an outdoorsman and loved off-roading in his old army jeep, being in the woods, and deer hunting.Later in life, Gil became a transportation contractor for the Onteora Central School district, including for those students with special needs. The kids and their families loved “Mr. Glass” for his big heart and comical personality.A stand-out in Gil’s life was his love of travel and adventure. Summers often were spent out west in a Winnebago with his family and close friends. Many of the family photos feature Gil wearing a cowboy hat often with a can of Coors beer, performing for the camera with the Rocky Mountains in the background.Florida was introduced to Gil by his aunts who moved to Fort Lauderdale in the 1930’s, and many Spring Breaks were spent there. He retired, became a “snowbird” and then eventually a full-time resident of the sunshine state but was always a New Yorker at heart.Gil lived a long life, he passed at age 94. He was a fighter to the end and was welcomed into Heaven on January 10, 2022. He is survived by his wife Patricia (née McCardle) of North Port, Florida; sons Peter (Cynthia) of Hurley, New York and Gerard (Victoria) of Prineville, Oregon; and daughters Holly (Johannes) of Washington DC and Suzi (Dale) of Orlando, Florida. He is survived by many grandchildren, Jessica, Peter (Katlyn), Emily (John), Adam (Natalie), Jerrett, Caitlin, Jillian, Christi (Ben), Martin, Tyler, and Jenna . He is also survived by 10 great grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.~There is no goodbye, for you shall always be in our hearts~ https://www.lastingmemories.com/gilbert-wallace-glass

Too many memories to choose just one. I guess I can sum things up by saying that my grandfather had a heart of gold. He did everything he could to help others. He loved his family so much, and adored his wife until the very end. Rest in heaven, Pop. You are so missed.

Oh no. Mr. Glass picked me up in a station wagon. Took me from phoenicia to new paltz for school. sometimes back also. I was just all of 13. He was nice but I was quiet. One day down the highway, we hydroplaned. The car just drifted away from speed and rain. He wasnt speeding..normal highway limits. I'm alive and it had to be because he knew what he was doing. Mr. Glass....fond memories, thank you for your kind service. I know you're up in heaven living easy and still talking about cars. God Bless you!

I met Gilbert about 40 years ago. I met him first professionally as a Dentist. My daughters and his granddaughter were babysat by the same lady and played together.
We had many conversations over the years together and we found that we both had an interest in common in outdoor sports.
I later met his wife Pat and 2 of his children who are also wonderful people.
I always liked Gil and will miss him.
