Gilbert L. Howe Jr.

Obituary

Howe, Gilbert (Roy) L. Jr., DO Born on December 2, 1933 in Pennsylvania, passed away at the age of 72 on November 16, 2006 in Corpus Christi, TX. Preceded in death by parents Rev. Gilbert L. Howe Sr. and Juanita I. Howe. Roy attended Pre-Med at Marquette University in Milwaukee, WI followed by Stills Osteopathic Medical School in Iowa. His internship was in Des Moines, IA while his residency was in Dallas, TX at Dallas Osteopathic Hospital. After working in Dallas and Leakey, TX, Roy settled in Corpus Christi where he has made his home for many decades. He loved the culture, food and people of Southwest Texas and felt blest to be able to live and work in a place he loved. Roy had a long career serving Corpus Christi as a Surgeon, OB/GYN and Family Practice physician. Some of the things Roy was most proud of were his work in microsurgery, his work with Kingsville Family Planning, being Medical Director of South Texas Family Planning Medical Clinics, and especially working with and providing health care to youth in the Corpus Christi Juvenile Court system – they really "kept me on my toes". Roy loved all music, especially jazz and blues. He was an accomplished trombone player who "cut" a 78-speed record while in college. He loved his music collection and driving his favorite German cars while listening to music. He was a highly intelligent man with a wonderful sense of humor. In his own words, what Roy would most want you to know about him is, "I just wanted to make people happy". We love Pops and will miss him dearly. He is survived by his wife, Sylvia; and children, Catherine O'Dell, TX and Scott (Heather) O'Dell, Germany. Survived by his children, Paul Howe, WY, Scott Howe, MN and Candy (Terry) Birk, MN, and their mother, Peggy Howe; Gilbert (Roy) L. Howe, III, OK, his mother Lori Howe (deceased); Yvette (John) Costanza, VA, Robin (Tom) Baxter, MO, and Robert (Terri) Howe, TX, and their mother Debbie Howe; Mistee (Dr. David) Tucker, TX, and Ashlee (Travis) Swartz, TX, and their mother Judy Howe. Survived by siblings, Carol (Rev. Douglas) Whiteside, NJ; Rev. Joseph (Judy) Howe, IL; Joy (Rev. William) Baxter, CA. Survived by many loving grandchildren, nieces, nephews, friends and colleagues. According to Roy's wishes there will be no funeral. Family and friends will celebrate his life through memorials to be held at a future date.

Not sure what to say?

Very sorry to hear of Roy's passing. I have many fond memories of my dad Bob and Roy playing trumpet and trombone duets in the Minneapolis area and beyond, years ago.

Both were great improvisors and Roy had such command of the instrument - a very accomplished trombone player. I'm still impressed with the ease of his style, the range and technical perfection of his musical abilities. He could have sat in with The Chicago Symphony or The Tonight Show Band. He was That Good!! ...
