He was my trumpet teacher from 1957-60, when he was living in Falls Church, VA and I was attending Annandale High School. He was the solo trumpeter of the Army Band and had the rank of Master Sergeant back then. I deeply appreciate him and all that he taught me. May he rest in peace and rise in glory.

Gil was our beloved neighbor for many years in Camp Hill, PA. He was a delightful man and great storyteller. We know he is now happy in heaven with his lovely wife Joyce. Our love to his family.

Col. Mitchell had a profound effect on the many young musicians who played in his Brass of Peace, founded in 1977 and now under the able leadership of Sylvia Alimena. It's remarkable to consider that this was almost a hobby project for him, since he had already had a long and distinguished musical career by that point.
