I was recently at Pinkys restaurant on Morehead street. Full of pictures of local celebrities and Charlottes past. Saw a picture of "captain Windy" and started reminiscing about the numerous times my family went to Riverview restaurant. Fond fond memories of the larger than life gentle giant. Loved reading the obituary and the precious spirit he had for children.. Makes him all the more a special childhood memory. I love my special pirate more than ever!

I remember him from my childhood . My dad worked with him at pneumafil and we saw him at riverview inn. Went there yesterday, 5/23/2015 and had many fond memories of CAPT. WINDY.....

Captain Windy was an icon as I grew up in Charlotte in the 60's. A true Gentleman and kind hearted man who everyone loved! Thank you to his family for sharing him with us and thank God for Gilbert Winchester! Your memory will live on forever!

I remember in the Late 60's we would all go in as many cars as we had Just to go see Captain Windy and the Best Fish Camp this town ever had more memories fad He was "A Great Pirate"and the kids all got a good memory and a fun trip to see him,he will be Missed....love to his Family they should be proud this city loved Him

When I came in to the Riverview and called him by his name, Gilbert. He would chase me out of the place and everyone would tell me know to call him that. I always say," That is his name and so I called him that." I will say that I will miss him and I am sorry that my daughter will never know the Captain Windy that I knew when I was growing up. I will miss and always love Captain Windy.

It is with much sadness to read about "Captain Wendy". Raised with his children, working with him at Riverview Inn and thinking he was a real Pirate when I was on his TV show at age 6. "Captain Wendy was a well know man. When he needed rubber stops put on his peg leg he came to Mikes's Cobble Shop that my husband at the time owned and had them added on.Memories will carry us on and leave a fond place in our hearts.

I loved my Uncle Gilbert (Captain Windy, which was my father Laban's Brother. I also am so sorry to hear that Aunt Joyce has passed (she was my mother Pauline's cousin). I loved them both very much and it will be a sadder world without them. I can remember riding around Bryson City in Uncle Gilbert's Cadillac convertible sing the Captain Windy song. He used to always try to trick us with his fake leg. What a wonderful man. He will be missed.

My love and my heart goes out to all of Uncle Gilberts family, I am so sad to hear that he passed. He was a wonderful man and such an inspiration to all who knew him. My grandma Lela was so proud of him and I know they are together again!
