Fr. Gilmer "Gil" Joseph Martin Jr., age 77, of Bush, LA, passed away on Wednesday, July 2, 2025, in Covington, Louisiana. He is survived by two sisters, Merle Triche and Lynne Bennett; two sisters-in-law, Mona Lemoine and Marsha Martin. He is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, and friends. Gil was preceded in death by his parents, Gilmer Joseph & Cecile Andry Martin Sr.; his sister, Eloise Martin; two brothers, Kim Martin, and Clark Martin; and two brothers-in-law, Cliff Triche and Tommy Bennett. He was a native of Laplace, Louisiana and a longtime resident of Lacombe and Bush, Louisiana. Fr. Gil attended St. Joseph Seminary College in St. Benedict. His seminary education was at Notre Dame Seminary in New Orleans. He was ordained to the priesthood on May 5, 1974, at St. Louis Cathedral. Fr. Martin served as Associate at Sacred Heart Church in Morgan City, St. Louis King of France Church in Metairie, and St. Andrew the Apostle Church in New Orleans. He was the founding pastor at St. Simon Peter Church in New Orleans, and additional pastorates were at St. Edward the Confessor in Metairie and St. John of the Cross in Lacombe. In addition to his pastoral assignments, Father Gil served as Dean of the East St. Tammany-Washington Deanery, Chaplain of St. Simon Peter Council of the Knights of Columbus, and Director of New Orleans Seminarians at Notre Dame Seminary. Fr. Martin retired in 2018. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Catholic Funeral Mass at St. John of the Cross Catholic Church, 61030 Brier Lake Dr., Lacombe, LA. on Saturday, July 5, 2025, at 11:00 A.M. Archbishop Gregory Aymond, celebrant. Visitation will be held at the church on Saturday after 9:00 A.M. until funeral time. Interment will follow at St. John Memorial Gardens, 2205 West Airline Hwy.
