Gladys was born in South St. Louis. Attended grade school at Our Lady of Sorrows. Graduated from Rosati-Kain High School, class of 1946. Her strong love for God drew her to become a Novice with the Sisters of Notre Dame (1946-1948). In 1949, she professed her vows and was known as Sr. John Bernard. In 1950, she left the order and was guided to a new calling. She met her late husband (Bert) in 1952 while square dancing. They were married August 15th, 1953, built a home in St. Ann, and raised 7 children while being active members of St. Kevin Catholic Church. She continued to live in the same house until her passing. Gladys was a homemaker and a very detailed bookkeeper for the family auto repair business. In her free time, for many years, she washed, ironed, and prepared the altar linens for the Church. In the 70s, she was a Girl Scout leader who truly enjoyed helping girls earn their badges. She loved sewing, exercising, hiking, camping, and outdoor cooking. She was an avid member of the St. Louis Zoo. Gladys was also amazing at researching genealogy. She brought life to our family’s history by exploring the lives of those that came before us. Another keen interest was volunteering for several years at Kids Smart where she merchandised the shelves and prepared for special events. She was a helping hand especially when it came to taking care of her grandchildren. She was always an inspiration to many and will be deeply missed by friends and family. The stories and memories of her calm and cheerful demeanor will be told and cherished forever.
