Obituary

Tough as nails, he was! Whenever anything needed to be done, like providing for his loving wife, Lorene and their children, Dolores, Ron, Larry and Patricia, he did it! With his talented hands, hard work, imagination and guts he survived the Dust Bowl of Oklahoma and the Depression of the 30's. Overcoming a limited education his tough-as-nails character yielded plenty to care for his family and more, enough to provide for himself to the end of his 95 years. Glen did everything from farming, window- dressing to grocery clerking to sign making to butchering and finally he found his niche as an accomplished building contractor. Always frugal, never wasteful he turned scrap wood into a cherished toy or replica of treasured objects such as cars, trucks, tractors and wagons. And, the bird houses!! The kind a crafter knew how to build to provide a safe place for a feathered family. Lorene, his loving wife of 68 years, two brothers and one sister preceded Glen in death. He is survived by his children, Dolores, Ron (Jeannie), Larry, and Pat (Bob); twelve grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren, two brothers Tom (with June) and Bob (with Maria), many nieces and nephews that he loved and enjoyed as if they were his own. Glen was "soft" when someone came to him with a need, he was generous, carefully, responsibly generous. He expected positive returns on his trust and investment of others and he was never disappointed. He loved and lived in Bakersfield from 1937 to 1994. Living at Summerhill Villa in Newhall, CA. he made many friends. One was very special to Glen, Ruth Milne who has become a cherished friend to all Glen's family. She shares in our loss and sorrow. Special thanks to Zaldy Caudor for being a friend and personal caregiver and to Vitas Healthcare who provided much needed support. We are so very grateful to the staff at Summerhill, who cared for him up to the morning he slipped into the presence of his Heavenly Father and reunited with his loving wife, parents, grandparents, brothers, sister and many, many friends. What a joy that must be to Glen who loved people. Services will be at Greenlawn Mortuary, 3700 River Blvd., Bakersfield, CA, on Friday, May 4th, at 1:00. Viewing will be 12:00-1:00 p.m. Glen Helm Dec. 17, 1911 - May 1, 2007

Guest Book

Not sure what to say?

Dear Dad: I didn't know till today, 5/30/07, that the option of signing this guest book was available, so my entry is a little delayed. However, that doesn't mean I haven't thought of or missed you since you stepped into the life you are now living. I've read the other statements of admiration and love for you, and it is easy to agree with all of them. The statements echo the comments I tried to make at your memorial service. I am especially grateful for your faithfulness as a husband...

Granddaddy,

Some of my fondest childhood memories are those that included our family vacations to Bakersfield. I would look forward to these trips with intense anticipation. One of the things that I admired about you as a child is that you always had a way of making a little boy feel as if he were a young man. There have been times that I have wished that we could have lived closer together, but now I realize that your love was never in any way diluted by distance. I felt your love for...

Hey Dad, I miss you and the weekly phone visits. But I'm happy that you and Mom are together again and with all of those loved ones already there in Heaven. What a reunion that must have been! I can see you now with your new eyes looking over our Lords' handy work in the preparation of our heavenly home. You must be in awe. I can imagine "The Lead Carpenter", our Jesus saying, "Glen grab your tools as I need a good carpenter".

We have so many membories but the one I will forever...

Uncle Glen What a reunion there must have been when you entered the gates of glory!!!!! I'll bet Granny got out her cast iron skillet and cooked up a chuck steak that she smothered in garlic salt and you all, Granny, Your Dad, George, You and Aunt Lorene, Uncle Claude and Aunt Edie, Uncle Guy and Aunt Hazel, Aunt Laverne and Jerry, and John Karr and Howie and everyone sat down and ate and had a great time around the table. And just think, that's just the beginning and it will never end. I...

Granddaddy,

I can only imagine the party that was going on in Heaven upon your arrival. The reunion with loved ones that had gone on before you must have been incredible! I know that Grandmother and Doug must have been right there at the gate to welcome you in with open arms! But I know that even with all of the singing and rejoicing you were able to hear your Lord and Savior say "Well done my good and faithful servant, enter into the joy of the Lord!"

I will remember you...

Dear Granddaddy,
I am so happy that you are home with Grandmother. Although I am saddened that you are not here with us, I know that you are with us in spirit and that you will be in my heart for all times. Thank you for all the happy memories. I Love you and will be seeing you again someday.
Love, Amy
