Lake Cumberland Funeral Home - Somerset Obituary

Glen Alan Wheeler, age 66, of Somerset, KY., finished the course set before him on the 8th of February 2021 after a short battle with cancer.

Glen was born on October 26, 1954 in Ferguson, KY., to the late Ruby and Bolin Wheeler. He was a member of the Ferguson United Methodist Church where he served many roles, but the greatest of which was being a beacon of light for Christ and a staunch advocate for youth and children. He worked at South Midway Supply, Cumberland Electric, and Southside Electric. Glen had a passion for his career and forged many decades-long relationships with his customers and co-workers. Wheeler Brothers Softball Park was born in the summer of 1979 and operated for over 30 years. The relationships he cultivated were life-changing for him. He viewed it as his calling and prayed daily that through the church leagues, others might find Christ. From youth group trips, to following the UK Wildcats on away games, to coaching his beloved Tarcat softball team, to traveling to the Shenandoah Mountains and Gettysburg, to a beach trip in the fall of 2020, Glen crafted a life full of fun and love and Jesus. The legacy he leaves behind is one of joy and hope.

Glen is survived by his wife of 43 years, Venita Wheeler; a daughter, Paula (and best friend, Steve) Christopher; three grandchildren, Mercedes Christopher, Braxton Wheeler, and Evie Wheeler, a bonus son, Bryan (and Heather) Wheeler; a sister, Nancy (and Charles Ed) Strunk and a brother, Bill (and Cindy) Wheeler and a brother-in-law, Larry Fisher. He loved a host of nieces and nephews, teams full of softball players, and the University of Kentucky Wildcats.

Along with his parents, Ruby and Bolin Wheeler, he was preceded in death by his brothers, David Roy (and Jewell), Tommy, Jody, and Donnie (Doris) Wheeler, and sisters, Juanita (James) Rutherford, Doris (Sam) Zimmerman, and Margaret (Jim) Price.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, February 13, 2021 from 5:00pm until 8:00pm at Lake Cumberland Funeral Home.

His funeral service will be held on Sunday, February 14, 2021 at 2:00pm at the Chapel of Lake Cumberland Funeral Home with Bro. Gary Clark and Bro. Bobby Sexton officiating. Burial will be at Somerset Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that expressions of sympathy be made to the Glen Wheeler Memorial Fund in c/o Lake Cumberland Funeral Home P.O. Box 1441 Somerset, KY 42502.

Not sure what to say?

Glen Wheeler was a man with great integrity and foresight with Wheeler ball park to provide opportunities to so many people in the Pulaski, Rockcastle, Lincoln and Laurel Counties. Church league, men’s league and co-Ed leagues provided good clean competition and opportunities to be with friends, families and teammates. It was great place to eat a hot dog, drink a coke and root for your team on the old ball diamond. Good times spent under the lights in league play and weekend tournaments. May...

Good times at Wheeler Ball Park. Thank you Glenn and Venita and Wheeler Clan. My condolences.

So sorry to hear of Glen passing. Was blessed to know he one of the nicest person I know. May God comfort the family in this different times but I know Glen is a much better place.

One of the finest men that I have ever met, played many of games with the Rockcastle Merchants at the park. Condolences to Mr. Glen's family.

Glen was a wonderful Man.He will be missed my many.Prayers and condolences to the family.

I don’t know where to start... Glen Wheeler treated me like a son for years... He coached me with the Tarcats and was my boss at Southside Electric... He was a father figure and always saw the best in me even when that wasn’t very good... He was always there to praise me and there to tell me when I was doing wrong... Glen was truly an inspiration to every one that he came to know... I’m glad I was able to get to know and love him... Many people will miss you boss but you will never be...

Glen was a great business friend with LP Chick Company for over 40 years. All LP Chick Co employees enjoyed working with and doing business with Glen. He will be greatly missed in the electrical business in the Somerset area. Our thoughts and prayers are with Glen's family and friends. Greg Chick, Jeff Hiemer, Perry Chick and the other Chick employees.

Words cannot convey the deep sadness I feel with the loss of Glen. He was a business partner in most of my electrical jobs, a fellow wildcat “worshipper” and most of all a true and honest friend. Godspeed Glen-we know you are now in the presence of our Savior Jesus. Covid prevents me from coming to the wake, but will have the family in my prayers.

Glen was always joyful, caring and I enjoyed doing business with him for many years. He loved to talk about his Wildcats, and as a Hoosier, he enjoyed talking about the upcoming games between our teams, (which were mostly won by Kentucky). Will miss him greatly and know he is at peace with Christ.
