T.E. Cooke-Overton Funeral Home - Suffolk Obituary

Gloria Jean was born on August 3, 1954, in Suffolk, VA to the late Jessie Mae Cross and George (Big Chief) Lassiter.

Gloria Jean Smith received her early education through Suffolk Public Schools, culminating in her graduation from John F. Kennedy High School, Class of 1973.

Jean and Willie Moses Smith united in marriage on February 9, 1977, and their love blossomed into a family with the arrival of three beloved children.

After working in various departments at Kraft Foods Inc., (formerly known as Planters Peanut Company) she retired after over 40 years of dedicated service.

Guided by her mother's selfless example, Jean dedicated her life to serving others and faithfully serving her church community. At a young age, she joined Greater Sweet Beaulah Apostolic Church, where she would become a pillar of devotion and leadership.

Jean's tireless commitment was evident in her distinguished roles: President of the Pastor's Aide, Chairwoman of the Women's Ministry, and member of the M.G. Fellowship Choir. Even as illness challenged her, Jean remained steadfast, actively serving on the Missionary Board, Deaconess Board, Virginia State Council, and Pentecostal Apostolic Assemblies of the World, Inc.

Affectionately known as the 'Fundraising Queen,' Jean expertly chaired numerous special programs, inspiring generosity and joy. Her unwavering spirit, compassionate heart, and legacy of service will forever be cherished by the church family she loved and served.

On Tuesday, October 1, 2024, Gloria Jean Smith peacefully transitioned to eternal life, surrounded by the love and devotion of her family.

Jean was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Willie Moses Smith; infant daughter, Amelia Monique Smith; parents, Jessie Mae Cross and George (Big Chief) Lassiter; and brothers, Daniel Branch and Tony Cross.

She leaves behind a legacy of love and cherished memories with her devoted children: Willie Moses Smith, Jr. (Chesapeake, VA); Antonio Smith and wife Nicole (Smithfield, VA); and Jessica Tanner and husband Damien (Suffolk, VA). Her grandchildren, whom she adored, are Teineshia Smith (Newport News, VA); Dareon Boone (Newport News, VA); Antonio Smith, Jr. and wife Genesis (Grafenwöhr, Germany); Lashanti Boone (Suffolk, VA); Darius Boone (Suffolk, VA); and Nehemiah Smith (Suffolk, VA); Keanna James (Newport News, VA); and DJ James (Newport News, VA)

Jean's great-grandchildren, who brought immense joy to her life, are Ian James (Newport News, VA); Alayah James (Newport News, VA); and Zariyah Smith, who affectionately called her 'G.G.' (Newport News, VA).

Not sure what to say?

Jean was a true friend from the day we met!! Her love for the Lord and her service to others was so evident!! The many hours we spent together at Centerbrooke and the surrounding area was a special joy to me! My love for her will continue into eternity! Her last words to me the day before she went to meet her Saviour was"I love you, too!"
