Gopal was a brilliant scholar and a man of wide interests befitting his rich cosmopolitan background and the beautiful family he shared with Hanna and Uma. I have just learned of his death and am devastated

The last time I saw Gopal he wore a pork pie hat and he carried purple irises wrapped in brown paper over his shoulder. The hat, a favorite of black jazz musicians. The iris a symbol of spring, royalty and wisdom. For me that image of Gopal captured him. (He was on his way to visit long time friends)

I met Gopal in a phonetics class at Columbia University in the Fall of 1980 and became best friends shortly thereafter. He was one of a kind. Spirited, gentle, charming, cultured and intelligent. A beautiful soul. RIP my friend, your life on earth will go on in our memories
