Lt. Col. Smith and his wife were always so gracious to me and I loved to visit with them when they lived in Baton Rouge. I'll never forget going through his massive airborne scrapbook with Lt. Col. Smith telling me about all the WWII events and places. His favorite photos were of him and Mrs. Smith...and their family. I will miss his humor and his kindness. I am honored to have known him and to have been counted as one of his friends. I'll have a rum and coke in your honor, sir.....often.

I have taken the liberty of sending notice of Colonel Smith’s death to Static Line, the Airborne newspaper, where it will be published in the TAPS column so that his fellow paratroopers can render a final salute to honor him for his service to his country.

My heart is broken and my soul is tremendously saddened to learn of Colonel Smith's passing. I met him years ago while working at a local travel agency and he became "family" to me. I consider him like my own grandfather. I always enjoyed hearing of his travels back to Normandy and would have loved to have had the opportunity to travel there with him and learn more about what he and his comrades endured for our freedom! I am grateful for having known him like I did and will always think...
