Grady Wright

Grady Glen Wright age 85, of Hooks, Texas, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Saturday, August 19, 2017, at his home.

Mr. Wright was born April 2, 1932 in Hooks, Texas and was a lifetime resident of Hooks. He was retired from Red River Army Depot after thirty seven years of service, an entrepreneur and owner and operator of Hooks Mini Storage.  He was a member of Myrtle Springs Baptist Church and a veteran of the United States Army. Grady was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, and a friend to many.

He was a race car driver for over forty two years in the Hooks Community and the surrounding area. He was one of the original creators of the first “dirt track” in Hooks. When Grady gave up racing, he remained an avid fan and supporter of his son, Gary.  Grady treasured nothing more than the time following his son’s 37 year racing career all the way to the Hall of Fame. He was Gary’s mentor, #1 fan and Crew Chief.  Along the way he made lifelong friends in the racing community. He enjoyed life to the fullest. On his eightieth birthday skydived out a plane and just 6 weeks ago was dazzling his great granddaughters with a couple front flips into the swimming pool. He also enjoyed playing domino with friends. He was loved by all who knew him and will be greatly missed.

He is survived by his wife of sixty three years, Yvonne Cowley Wright of Hooks, Texas; one son and daughter-in-law: Gary and Lori Wright of Hooks, Texas; one brother: Bill Wright and his wife Linda, of Hooks, Texas; his two granddaughters: Lauren Smith and her husband Nick of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, Chelsea Moore and her husband Brett of Hattiesburg, Mississippi; two special great granddaughters: Adley and Isla Smith; a host of friends, nieces, nephews and cousins.

A celebration of Grady’s life will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, August 22, 2017 at Myrtle Springs Baptist Church with Rev. Kyle Peters officiating. Burial will be in Myrtle Springs Cemetery under the direction of Chapelwood Funeral Home.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Monday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M.

Not sure what to say?

My daddy J B Strickland, was a mechanic for one of the other drivers. I loved going and watching Grady. It was like a big family. I thought a lot of Grady. I know Grady and my dad and the other race car family that has gone on before are having a great time. Love him.

It was awesome being a member of such a great racing team. All drivers and pit crews were like an extended family. Loved and miss them all they are all racing that great track in heaven. ❤❤

Mrs. Wright and family. ..I am so sorry for your loss. Your precious memories will live on forever. You all are in my thoughts and prayers.

Mrs. Wright, Gary, and the Wright family, I was sorry to hear about Grady's passing. He was a great guy and I know he will be missed by his family. I will always remember him presenting me my high school diploma, and then telling me that we need to hurry up so we could get to the races. May God be with the family in the days to come.

May God bless you and your family in this time of sorrow.
Grady will be missed. He was a wonderful person.
