CHALKLEY, Gregory B., 49, was born November 28, 1961 in Richmond, Va. In tribute to Greg, his closest childhood friend of over 40 years, Stuart Hubbard, wrote: "Greg went to be with the Lord on September 8, 2011. Greg Chalkley was a proud Hanover native son with a passion and love for his wife and step children, family, friends, God and certainly not least of all, his country. Greg recently changed his last name to McCracken to show his love for his maternal grandmother. Greg loved his grandmother dearly and she was a positive, lasting influence in Greg's life. Greg would light up a room with his smile, sparkling blue eyes, great sense of humor and wonderful laugh. Greg always knew just what to say to make you feel good about yourself. He was a graduate of Lee-Davis High School, and also attended VCU and Radford College. Greg went on to join the Marines, and he was appointed as the platoon leader for his outstanding leadership abilities. To say that Greg was a proud Marine would be an understatement. I think that COURAGE, PRIDE, HONOR & LOVE are the words that best describe Greg. Greg's wife, Elizabeth, and step children, Alex and Lauren, were the most important thing in Greg's life. Elizabeth was the love of Greg's life and he adored her. Greg's other passions included physical fitness, pumping iron in the gym, running, boxing, mixed martial arts, music, the outdoors, football, baseball, Key West (where he was married), the ocean, Florida, reading, religion, politics, camping and good conversation with friends. A true 'Florida Boy', Greg's favorite teams were the Florida Marlins and the Miami Dolphins." He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth, his stepdaughter & stepson, Lauren and Alex; his father and mother; two brothers; sisters-in-law and several nieces and nephews; as well as his wife's family. Greg will be dearly missed by all who had the honor of knowing him." A memorial service will be held for Greg at Bethel Baptist Church, located at 1100 Huguenot Springs Rd. in Midlothian, Va. on September 23, 2011 at 2 p.m. (1400).

Not sure what to say?

I woke up today and for some reason thought about my buddy, Greg. I am very sad to hear this news of him passing and my thoughts and prayers go out to everyone who is grieving over this very sad news. Greg was mine and my wifes very first friend down here in south Florida. He ended up being one of our best friends as the years went by. We spent several holidays together and we're there for him during some of his difficult times and he was always there for us too. We had many laughs together,...

<3 Always In Our Hearts & Minds <3 ....Please remember us with pennies from heaven:) Infinite hugs/kisses from earth to you...Those incredible smiles & loud laughter will always be remembered & missed forever...Deb

My sympathy and prayers go to Greg's family. I knew Greg from High School and worked with him for a few years at the Golden Skillet. Always the gentleman and a hard worker. Greg loved the Marines and always talked about what a great experience it was for him. I am sure Greg will be truly missed by those in his life.

Sincerely

What can I say my baby brother,I will miss you more than words can ever say. Greg was my best friend and we called each other brother and sister. The best of the bartenters in richmond for a long time. We shared so many stories and always had so many laughs. I only hope that all the peace that is out there will go to him now for he deserves it.
I love you my brother may God Bless You and your family.
Sharon

Please accept my genuine and heartfelt expression of sympathy for the very premature passing of a true gentleman. It was a combination of good fortune and Greg’s desire to achieve that essentially brought him into our family circle for many years.

As a younger man, he worked with my grandmother, whom he tenderly referred to as “Squally”, at the local chicken joint, “The Skillet” in Mechanicsville. It would be through weekly visits to see her and his routine inclusion to...

At times like these we all stop to consider the person we knew and wonder if they knew all the wonderful footprints they had left behind. I adored Greg and was always saddened by our loss of contact over the years, but one thing remains true....Everytime I think of the man that I knew I can't help but smile and get a warm fuzzy feeling. He took me under his wing, when we were just in our twenties, and taught me everything I knew about being a great bartender. We had such a blast and became...

Please know Greg's family is in my thoughts and prayers at this most difficult time. I had the pleasure of meeting him through his dear friend Sharon and am saddened to hear of his passing. May he rest in peace.

My thoughts and prayers got out to Greg and his family. RIP Greg.

My thoughts and prayers are with Greg's family and friends. May God wrap his loving arms around you and give you comfort and peace. I knew Greg from Lee Davis High School but have not seen him since graduating all those years ago. RIP Greg
