Swartz Funeral Home - Flint Obituary

SAVOIE, Gregory A. - Age 59 of Diamondale, MI left this world and entered his eternal dwelling place on Thursday, February 20, 2014, surrounded lovingly by his family in Florida. A funeral service will be held at 10:00 AM on Saturday, March 1, 2014 at Swartz Funeral Home in Flint, Rev. Terry Bate officiating. Visitation will be at the funeral home on Friday, February 28, 2014 from 2-8 PM, with a memorial celebration and testimonies of Greg?s life to be shared at 7 PM. Burial in Crestwood Cemetery. Greg was born September 21, 1954 in Flint, MI. He was a 1972 graduate of Ainsworth High School and a 1976 Michigan State graduate. He was a City of East Lansing housing inspector. Greg was an avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed gardening, hunting, fishing and camping with friends and family over the years. Most of all, Greg was passionate about his family whom he loved dearly and who were so important to him. As for his precious grandchildren, their beloved ?Peepaw? will forever be remembered for his barbeque chicken, bon fires, harvest time in his pumpkin patch/garden and the fishing and turtle hunts at Lake Arbutus. His grandchildren will treasure the park visits and his special ?to the moon and back? pushes on the swings. Anyone who knew Greg benefited from his friendly, kind, compassionate and caring ways and he always showed an interest in how they were and what they were doing. He was definitely a people person and loved by many!
Left to cherish his memory are Children: Naomi (Blake) Miller, Gregory II (Acacia) Savoie, Miriam Savoie (Alex Bobonis), Rebekah (Matt) Moritz, David Savoie and Elijah Savoie; Precious Grandchildren: Isaiah, Samuel, Gabriella, Gianni, Giulianna, Giselle, Esther, Vaeda and 3 unborn grandchildren, including Thaddeous Savoie; Mother, Barbara Savoie; 4 sisters: Sandy (Dale) Massey, Gail Savoie, Diane (Robert) Nine, Darlene (Mike) Burns and Pam (Terry) Sherman; 3 brothers: Scott (Suzy) Savoie, Steve (Christina) Savoie, Todd (Pam) Savoie; fiance, Diane Harmon. Greg is also survived by several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends. He was preceded in death by his father, Alphonse Savoie in 2006.
The family wishes to extend their thanks to Stacey Henson for all of her outpouring of care and concern for Greg, especially during the past few months of his battle with cancer. Also special thanks to Greg?s co-workers who selflessly gave up their vacation time so that Greg could continue his treatment and keep his job too. Finally thanks to all who prayed and brought comfort to Greg in many ways during his illness. He truly knew how loved he was!
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude?s Childrens Hospital whom Greg also had a passion for. Greg, you will be greatly missed, always loved and never forgotten. We will meet again in Heaven! Please share your condolences with the family at m-live.ocm/Flint Journal.

Not sure what to say?

I miss you Peepaw. Always have and always will. All of my memories of this man are full of love, joy, and a tad bit of craziness and rule-breaking. Hehe. I can wholeheartedly and honestly say that my grandfather was an amazing peepaw and loved his grandchildren to death. We miss you.

I was also one of Greg's college roommates at MSU. I remember him as an old soul and a wise man even at a young age. He loved to smile and have fun, but had an incredible ability to concentrate even when chaos surrounded him. We will all miss him. My best to his family.

I was shocked to hear of Greg's passing as I was trying to contact him online. I realize that this comes very late, we obviously have not kept in touch lately, but I am sick that I wanted so long to attempt contact and will miss him terribly. We met the 1st day at MSU at lunch, and I nicknamed him Midget and he me Lanky. We lived together most of our days together then, and he taught me many things about life. After MSU, I moved for work to Pennsylvania, then Illinois, but would still try to...

Gregory was always so nice and always made me smile, he will be missed. Charlene Merten

My sincerest condolences to the Savoie family. What a shock! I did not know he was ill. I went to school with Greg from 1st grade through 10th, until they closed Holy Redeemer High School. The last time I saw Greg was a few years ago at one of our terrific 8th Grade HR Class Reunions at Mario's Pizzeria in Flint, Mich. Mario's is where the gang always went after a Friday school football / basketball game. Since we both have the same first letter of the last name, we sat near each other for...

Geggy :Travis will always be one person I will try to fashion my life after. My friend will rest in peace

I was sad to learn of Greg's death as I know he felt he had so much to live for on this earth. I enjoyed speaking with Greg at the City of East Lansing when our paths crossed and regarded him as a thoughtful and good man. With sincere sympathy.
