Professor McKim-Smith was a loyal alumna of Newcomb College and an articulate advocate for women's colleges. The Future of Newcomb College, Inc., and those among us who knew Gridley in her undergraduate years, truly mourn this courageous and intelligent woman.

Prof. McKim-Smith was everything a teacher, and a person, should be, and more. It was an honor to be her student. She is so missed on Bryn Mawr's campus and Carpenter Library is not the same without her. We love you, Gridley.

I first met Gridley during her graduate school days when she shared a house in Cambridge with several other people, one of whom, Julie, later became my wife. Through our long friendship I was fortunate enough to accompany her on many trips to museums in New York, Spain, and Mexico. As a professor of Spanish & Latin American civilization and culture, I learned a great deal from listening to her comments while pushing the wheelchair through the museums as she took notes for future articles...
