Janet , I just heard about Guenter,s passing from a friend. So sorry for your loss. He was a strong dedicated husband, father and Doctor who I had the pleasure to know and delight in his youthful humor as an intern in our training at memorial hospital. Will always remember him ❤

I was one of many UMMS medical students to have the great fortune of learning under Dr. Spanknebel's mentorship. His example of respectful devotion to his patients, his outstanding clinical and diagnostic skills and his profound generosity to students served to inspire me throughout my career in internal medicine. With condolences and appreciation of the family who enriched his life, Erica Johnson, MD UMMS '75

I had the great privilege of knowing Guenter from the early 1980s to the time of his retirement. In the eyes of a medical student, he was a larger-than-life figure. During my time as a resident at what was then called Worcester Memorial Hospital, Guenter was ever-present, full of information, and always willing to help a patient, a family member, a trainee, or a colleague. As I got interested in gastroenterology, he was a great support, and when the time came to look for a place to work,...

My condolences to Janet on the loss of your husband and the Spanknebel family on the loss of their father and brother. I have had the pleasure and honor to work for Dr. Spanknebel for over 17 years. In a very short time I came to realize that underneath that tough guy exterior was a truly warm and caring soul. I will miss that soul and will remember him fondly. Every day when he left the office he would say "peace" so I say to you "Peace Boss".

It was a pleasure to work under and train with Dr. Spanknebel at Memorial Hospital in the late 1970's. What a gifted and talented man. And, yes, he was the first doctor who demonstrated an upper endoscopy to many of us. I also remember how wonderful be was to Dr. Robinson, the Cardiologist. He was an unforgettable man and physician.

Dear Janet, my condolences to you and your family.

Bill and I loved Guenter, I have many fond memories of our times together.

Rest In Peace my friend.

Marge Benedict

Rest in peace Dr Spanknebel,
