Gwendolyn Ann (Durett) Armstrong, of Waitsfield, died peacefully on Sunday, December 21stat the Woodbridge Nursing Home in Berlin, VT.

Gwen grew up in the Barre and Graniteville areas.

She received her high school education at Union Springs Academy in Union Springs, NY

In 1952 she married her childhood friend and sweetheart, Gene Lorin Armstrong. The couple had two children. They shared a house in Middlesex with her parents from 1957 to 1965 where her husband operated the Like-Nu Auto Body Repair.

She worked at the Vermont State Treasurer’s Office before taking a job at the Vermont State Employees Credit Union. The family moved to Maine in 1965 for 3 years where she worked at various office positions.

When the family returned to Vermont in 1968 they built a new home and settled in Montpelier Jct.

After returning from Maine she was employed again for many years at the Vermont State Employees Credit Union. After retiring from the credit union she provided in-home care for 3 individuals for a few years. After the retirement of her husband the couple eventually moved to his family home in Waitsfield.

Gwen was an active member of the Barre Seventh-day Adventist Church. Over the years she held different church offices and served on the church and school boards.

She is preceded in death by Gene, her loving husband and caregiver of 56 years. She is survived by her mother, Thesalie Durett of Waterbury, VT; daughter and son-in-law, Stephanie and Rick Wall of Methuen, MA; and son, Scott W. Armstrong of Tampa, FL.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 10th at the Barre Seventh-day Adventist Church, 297 Vine Street-Berlin, at 4:00 p.m. Contributions in her memory can be made to Central Vermont Academy, 317 Vine Street-Berlin, Barre, VT 05641 or the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, VT Div, 75 Talcott Rd, Williston, VT 05495.
