I just now learned of Dr. E's passing, with great sadness. I was in his Elementary Structural Analysis class at PSU in the mid-1970's. There was so much more to his lessons, far beyond the technical elements of the subject. Dr.E instilled in us as students the pursuit of higher standards, both ethically and as professionals. His firm but graceful style of teaching inspired me. I also remember attending his open house as a senior, meeting many of the leaders of the Portland engineering...

Chik had a heart of gold. The way he cared for Ulku was extraordinary. He cared for all people. I am blessed to have known him. A fond memory was one year at PICMET in Istanbul I was working the registration desk and very sick. Chik insisted on bringing me Tylenol which made all the difference. I was always so excited to see Chik. He will be missed dearly.

Chik and I began our friendship in the late sixties when we were both graduate students in Structural Engineering at the University of Texas, Austin.
