Mr. Hollon Rudolph Guirkins, age 89, a resident of 3646 Harvey Road, Washington, died Sunday November 26, 2017 at his home.

Funeral services will be 2:00 pm Wednesday November 29, 2017 at Woodard’s Pond Church of Christ and will be conducted by Eddie Gurganus. Burial will follow in Piney Grove Cemetery. Members of the Bunyan Volunteer Fire Department will serve as pallbearers. The elders and deacons of Woodard's Pond Church, Charlie F. "Butch" Cutler, E. Larry "Pee Wee" Cutler, Eddie Hedgepeth and the little boy across the road, Julian Cutler will serve as honorary pallbearers.

Mr. Guirkins was born in Beaufort County on May 24, 1928 to the late Jesse Hollon Guirkins and Rosa Lee Newberry Guirkins. He was a graduate of Bath High School. On December 25, 1947, he married Polly Elizabeth Cutler who preceded him in death on December 27, 1997. He then married Nora Frances Davenport on August 28, 1999 and she survives him. He was a retired letter carrier for the USPS, heavy equipment operator for the DOT and was a truck driver for the Selby Company and Guy Shavender Trucking, Inc. He was a member of Woodard’s Pond Church of Christ where he served as Sunday School Superintendent, Elder and Deacon. He was also a member of Washington Masonic Lodge # 675, former member of the Red Men’s Lodge and was the first Chief and a founding member of the Bunyan Fire Department.

Survivors include his wife of the home, Nora Davenport Guirkins, one daughter, Shannon M. Guirkins, two grandchildren, Amber Challis Carter and husband Shawn, Jami Challis Hux and husband Donald, three great grandchildren, William Hollon Wilkins, Donald C. “Trey” Hux III, Matthew Chase Carter all of Washington, one sister, Kay G. Bray of Springfield, Virginia, four step children, David Sikes Jr. and wife Marilyn, Vida Cutler, Elaine Sikes Tigchelaar and husband James, eleven step grandchildren, David “Trey” Sikes and wife Stormy, Clayton Sikes, Matthew Allmon, Daniel Allmon, Heath Willard and wife Dangie, Dwayne Willard and wife Rebecca, Serena Hopkins and husband Ryan, Johnnie Sikes and wife Jasna, Jamie Davis and husband Danny, Erica Lassiter and husband Mike, Jessica Andrews and husband Rob and ten in-laws, Peggy Main and husband F.D., E. Larry Cutler and wife Joyce, Charlie F. Cutler and wife Vera, Patsy C. Woolard and husband Sarge, Betty C. Elzey and husband Mike, Anna D. Dunn, Luette D. Cuthrell and husband George, Julius Davenport and wife Eunice, Dwight Davenport and wife Jan and Vance Davenport. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Sonja Dare Guirkins, three sisters, Mary G. Elliot, Eleanor Scott, Dorothy Morris and two brothers, Edwin Guirkins and John Guirkins.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm Tuesday November 28, 2017 at Paul Funeral Home & Crematory of Washington and other times at the home of his daughter, Shannon M. Guirkins, 3614 Harvey Road, Washington.
