ATKINS, HAROLD GLADSTONE, JR., age 71, of Birmingham, AL, passed away Wednesday, January 2, 2008. Visitation for Mr. Atkins will be Saturday, January 5, 2008 from 1:30 pm - 3 pm at Lowndes Funeral Home, Columbus, MS. Funeral services will be at 3 pm Saturday, January 5, 2008 in the Lowndes Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Keith Harwell officiating. Interment will be in Friendship Cemetery, Columbus, MS with Lowndes Funeral Home directing. Mr. Atkins was born in Columbus, MS, May 5, 1936 to the late Harold Gladstone and Martha Maurine Morris Atkins. He retired in 1998 as a locomotive engineer with Norfolk Southern Railroad after 37 years of service and was a member of First Cumberland Presbyterian Church, Columbus, MS. Mr. Atkins loved to work in his garden and enjoyed everything nature presented. Mr. Atkins is survived by his wife, Cynthia Carroll Atkins, Birmingham, AL; sons, Stanley Douglas Atkins and David Allen Atkins both of Birmingham, AL; daughter, Pamela Atkins McCord, Texas; step-son, James Matthews, Birmingham, AL; sister, Anna Katherine (Ed) Prescott, Columbus, MS; brothers, Henry Edward (Joan) Atkins and James Donald (Nancy) Atkins both of Columbus, MS; 10 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and a host of nieces and nephews. Pallbearers will be his nephews and David Ashmore. Honorary Pallbearers will be Selvin Swartz and Hilton McCollough. Memorials may be sent to the donor's church or favorite charity.
