Dr. Harold Kaminetzky of Scotch Plains, NJ passed away on November 7th, 2014, survived by his wife, Beverlee, 2 children and 4 grandchildren, including sons Keith (Judy) and Eric (Cathy), and grandchildren Leah and Alex from Bridgewater, and Jake and Sam from Seattle.

Dr. Kaminetzky served in WWII as a hospital corpsman in the Navy. He graduated from the University of Illinois Medical School in 1950, completed residency at the Research and Education Hospitals of the University of Illinois in 1954, and became a Professor at the University of Illinois. In 1968 he joined the faculty of the New Jersey Medical School as Chairman of Ob/Gyn, later serving as Dean.

Dr. Kaminetzky's research focuses were cervical cancer and maternal nutrition. He was a member of the American Medical Association, the American College of Surgeons, the New York Academy of Medicine, the American Association of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, the American Gynecological Society, the Central Association of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, the National Research Council, and he was Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Gynecology and Obstetrics. He has served on the Executive Board of the International Federation of Gynaecology and Obstetrics, and he is the author of many scientific articles and text books in the field.

In recognition and support of his efforts, The Harold A. Kaminetzky Prize Paper award was established in 2008 to recognize the best article from a non-U.S. researcher each year. The recipient of the award receives $2,000.

Dr. Kaminetzky has served the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) as Secretary, Commissioner of Education, Vice President, and then President. He was instrumental in moving the ACOG Headquarters from Chicago to Washington DC. He was also an active member of ACOG District III's Advisory Council.

Dr. Kaminetzky became full-time staff at ACOG from 1985–1994, serving as Vice President of the Division of Practice Activities. He encouraged Fellows to become knowledgeable about how national and state Government impacts women's health care, and he encouraged them to become activist proponents for patients, and the practice of obstetrics and gynecology. In retirement, he continued participating as a member of the Ob-Gyn PAC Governing Committee, urging Fellows to participate as PAC contributors.

Not sure what to say?

Thoughts and prayers for you! I will always remember how kind he was.

Condolences. My mom was the late Shirley Morrison (nee Mizes.) Among her albums, I found this photo of her on the right, with Harold Kaminetzky, center, and another girl on the left. Labeled 1942. Presumably Chicago.

Beverlee and family I was a medical student when he joined New Jersey Medical School as Chair of OB/GYN. Iwas then a resident and lifelong friend of HAK. We miss him at all of our ACOG meeting both locally and nationally. He was always ready to give advice that only he could give. He regularly attended our NJ ACOG meetings and was a wealth of knowledge for us. We think of him and miss him when ever we have a meeting.

I think of him often he was a great person!!

We miss even more this year as the whole world seems upside down by a new pendemic. We could use your sage wisdom and "pithy" comments as we navigate our way back to health and sanity

He was the nicest and kind person I ever known.

Dear Beverlee,

Dr. Kaminetzky will be missed. His support of ACOG's American Indian/Alaska Native programs was greatly appreciated. We will miss his presence at the Indian breakfast at the Annual Meeting.

Dear Beverlee, Your friends and colleagues at the Teaching Performance Center send to you our deepest sympathy and love in the passing of Harold. His was a special talent of friendship, insights and warmth, each of which touched me deeply. Love to you, Martha M. Mobley

Harold was an extraordinary man.We will miss his friendly smile and his expert advice at our NJOGS Council meetings.
