Hal at 2011 WSC at Stateline, NV

I first met Hal in 1982, and he was watching the USBR cloud seeding evaluation project. Hal had an amazing memory, and loved to tell stories and show stunning photos at Western Snow Conferences. His WSC colleagues will miss him terribly. He was the dinner speaker at the 2011 WSC meeting.

We really enjoyed working and visiting with Hal over the years on his work with UNR/DRI and at the Western Snow Conference. He shared monthly data for publication in the SCS Nevada snow survey bulletin from his DRI network in Tahoe Meadows and elsewhere in the Sierra. We really enjoyed our conversations with Hal about his Trails West and snow surveys adventures.

Our deepest condolences to his family.

I remember Hal from my years at UNR (1972-77) studying in Little Valley. His kind and gentle manner and love of the natural world was inspirational.

Our lives were truly blessed to share the life of this amazing friend. We loved his visits to the dental office for many years. Sharing his adventures, knowledge, appreciation of this beautiful earth, and sincere friendship will remain with us as choice memories. Love and prayers to his family,
Mildred Earl & Dr. Clair Earl

Hal at Needles Rocks, Pyramid Lake

I first met Hal in 1975 and we got together during my many visits to the Reno area over the past 39 years. Hal and his colleague Jim Ashby helped us in many of our climate-related projects in the Truckee River-Pyramid Lake system. He was a great and generous human being and will be deeply missed by all that knew him. The Great Basin will not be the same without him.

Hal was a wonderful person to be around and to work with. Rest well my good friend.
