Harold Lloyd Krueger
1932–2021
HAROLD LLOYD KRUEGER died peacefully at home on December 7th after a long period of declining health. Hal, son of Lloyd and Winona Krueger, was born in Newark, NJ, and was raised in Bloomfield. Hal graduated from Dickinson College, PA, and earned an MA from Rutgers University. He was an outstanding trombone player throughout his college years and played several instruments in a band at a resort in PA during that time. After graduation, he served two years in the Army with the occupational forces in Austria, where he perfected his skiing skills.
It was while skiing down the slopes of Mt. Tremblant in Canada that he noticed Janet Nichols skiing ahead of him. After marrying in 1963, Hal and Jan moved to East Orange where Hal taught English at the high school and served as the advisor to their award-winning school newspaper.
After obtaining his master’s degree in Elementary Administration, Hal taught fifth grade in East Orange. He was promoted to principal and then moved on to become a long-serving and much loved principal at Shongum Elementary School in Randolph, NJ, where he and Jan raised their family of three boys.
Their children are Bill and his wife Lisa, who now live in Mooresville, NC, Tom and his wife Sara, in Brooklyn, NY, and James and his wife Maureen, in Bovina, NY. Hal and Janet have six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Upon retirement, Hal and Jan moved north to chase the snow, relocating to their dream home in Newbury, NH, where Hal enjoyed a second career as a ski instructor at Mt. Sunapee. He taught there for 18 years, taking breaks to travel extensively with Jan, visiting Kenya, Tahiti, Mexico, Antarctica, Alaska, Hawaii, and Canada, as well as many places in between.
Lovingly called PaK by his children, Hal lived a life of quiet but powerful kindness and integrity. He was predeceased by his brother Gordon, and is survived by Jan who lives in Springfield, MA, and his children. A memorial service will be held on May 16 at Marshall Cemetery in Newbury, NH at 11 am. A gathering for old friends and acquaintances is scheduled in Randolph, NJ on Friday May 6; details will be forthcoming.
