Mr. Porter was a profound inspiration in my life. Thanks to his physics class, I changed my goals from a career in music to one in physics. Mr. Porter really wonderfully conveyed how much joy can be had from studying physics, joy that continues to compound for me each day as I continue my career, and which I strive to faithfully pass along to my students. Thank you so much Mr. Porter, both for the passion you conveyed and for the support you gave me as I took my first steps along this path....

I ran for Stump's X-country teams in '74, '75, and '76. He was by far my favorite educator at Ithaca High School. He taught us the value of setting goals and working hard to achieve them. But he was so inspirational that you wanted to work hard. He also had a great sense of humor and loved tell stories about the runners who came before us. I can still see him holding a clipboard at top of Renwick Drive, where we did hill sprints. Truly a great man who motivated many young people to do their...

I remember Mr Porter as a teacher that was willing to help you understand ideas that were beyond comprehension. I did not do well in his class, but that was due to my inability to understand the concepts. I do remember learning about the surface tension of water. I did appreciate that he had options for those of us that needed extra credit to make it through his class with a passing grade. May you feel the comfort of knowing he helped many children. And may you look to God for sustenance...

Mr. Porter showed me way more respect than I deserved in high school...and kind and non-judgemental person. I will always remember him fondly and gratefully, May his memory be for blessing to all those he leaves behind.

Mr. Porter was such an inspiration to me at IHS. I especially loved his mystery demo's...where he encouraged us to hypothesize about a particular physics or chemistry demonstration. He would just smile and listen and compliment us on our ideas...
He also had so many sick puns to share!
I am a middle school science teacher today in Massachusetts, and I do the same....mystery demos....and we simply hypothesize, argue, reason, share what's going on. Please accept my...

Stump was the father figure I needed in high school. As the XC coach he always nudged me in the right direction. He was a very caring man that would have done anything for the kids. He will always have a very special spot in my heart.
