Harold Snelling Jr., 79, of South Bend, Indiana departed this life peacefully at home on Sunday, May 5, 2013. He was born on April 24, 1934 to the union of Nevada and Harold Snelling Sr.


Harold received his formal education through the South Bend Community School System and then enlisted in the United States Military. Harold married Stella Tutton-Montgomery on August 31, 1985.


He worked for AM General many years, retiring from there. Harold was also the owner of the Ebony Lounge, H&T Lounge, and Duraclean Snelling & Snelling Carpet Cleaning Services. Harold was a member of the Elks Lodge. Famous for his cooking, he loved to barbeque. He never told anyone his recipe for that "special sauce" that he was so proud of.


Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Stella Snelling of South Bend, Indiana; children: Dr. Linda Chavis-Green (Vincent) of Indianapolis, Indiana, Patricia Ann Snelling of Houston, Texas, Jerome Chavis and David Darnell, both of South Bend, Indiana, Michelle Chavis of Houston, Texas, Richmond C. Montgomery (Babette), Denita Henry (Melvin), Terri Anne Montgomery, Renee Scott (Maurice); 14 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren. It is said that as one life ends, another begins and on May 5, 2013, the same day as Harold's departure from this life, a great-grandchild, Christopher James Mccowan II was born to his granddaughter, Jayco Parhams. Harold also leaves a sister, Lois (Victor) Steward; and a brother, George (Mary) Hugins Jr., all of South Bend, Indiana.


Harold was preceded in death by his parents, Harold Snelling Sr. and Mrs. Nevada Paskell; and siblings: Hazel Humphrey, Lucille Spann, Georgia Ann Hugins, Emma Hugins, Carey Hugins, Gwendolyn Hugins, Hilda Snelling and Earl Brown.

Funeral services for Harold Snelling Jr. will be held on Monday, May 13, 2013 in New Horizons Outreach Ministry, 56165 Mayflower Road, South Bend. Visitation will begin at 11:00 a.m. and service at 12:00 noon. Burial will follow in Highland Cemetery.
