Harry L. Anderson, 100, a life resident of Chicago, expired April 10, 2023. He was born June 15,1922 to Captain and Dollie Anderson. He was one of five children; two brothers, William and Rudolph; two sisters, Nettie and Louise.


He graduated from Englewood High School and later went to Wilson Jr. College to obtain an associate degree in law enforcement. Shortly after that he was induced into the United States Army. After three years of service, he was honorably discharged with a rank or First Sergeant. He continued his education attending Roosevelt University obtaining a Degree in Sociology and a master’s degree in administration.


He met and married Violet Smith. Their shared forty-two years before she proceeded him in death.


All the while pursuing his education, he served the City of Chicago as a Chicago Police Officer, becoming a detective, and had assignments including burglary, robbery, and homicide. He was promoted to sergeant and was selected to be the first African American supervisor in the homicide section. He also gave direction on law enforcement and sociology at Malcolm X College and Kennedy King College.


Retiring from the Chicago Police Department he became Chief of Police at Chicago State University for several years.


Harry loved his family and friends. He had a great sense of humor. He was a member of the 1st Tee Golf Club, past member of the Civic Century Social Club, Lords of Chesterfield, a longtime member of the Chicago Assembly and a life member Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity.


He leaves to cherish his memory, his granddaughters, Valencia and Markita Bush; his sister, Louise Watson of Canton Michigan; his brother, Rudolph; his nephews, nieces, and a host of dear friends.
