CRAWFORD, Harry Stephenson Jr., M.D., departed this life on Thursday, June 19, 2008. Preceding him in death were his parents, Ruth S. and Harry S. Crawford Sr.; and son, Daniel Crawford. Dr. Crawford is survived by his wife of 54 years, Mary Lane Crawford; two sons, Dr. Harry S. Crawford III (Flora) of Harrisonburg, Va. and Major (Ret.) Franklin L. Crawford (Verona) of Chesapeake, Va.; two daughters, Mary S. and Ruth A. Crawford of Richmond; four grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; brother, Franklin H. Crawford (Charlotte); daughter-in-law, Pamela Crawford of Suffolk, Va.; seven sisters-in-law, Clara Brown, Verna Haynes (Oci), Rose Davis (John) and Anita K. Lane, all of St. Louis, Mo., Muriel Pulliam (Oscar) of Omaha, Neb., Marion Lane of San Diego, Calif. and Vonceil Lane of Gulfport, Miss.; two brothers-in-law, Lt. Col. (Ret.) Charles A. Lane (Louise) of Omaha, Neb. and William Lane of St. Louis, Mo.; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Dr. Crawford was a graduate of Armstrong High School, Virginia Union University and Meharry Medical School and attended Howard University, School of Medicine. He served in the U.S. Navy and practiced medicine in Richmond for more than 40 years. Following retirement, Dr. Crawford worked at the Church Hill Clinic. For more than 17 years, he worked with the Sickle Cell Initiative Program and was inducted into the Sickle Cell Hall of Fame. Dr. Crawford was the team physician for the Armstrong and Maggie Walker High Schools and he was a volunteer with the Boy Scouts of America. Dr. Crawford was the treasurer of the Richmond Medical Society for more than 25 years. He was also a member of the Old Dominion Medical Society and Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity. The family will receive friends at Mimms Funeral Home, 19th and Hull Sts., Wednesday, June 25, 2008, from 7 to 8 p.m. The Omega service of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity will be held during this time. The funeral service will be held on Thursday, June 26, 2008, at 1 p.m. at the Second Baptist Church, 3300 Broad Rock Road, Richmond, Va. 23234. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Florence Neal Cooper Smith Sickle Cell Initiative, at MCV Foundation, P.O. Box 980234, Richmond, Va. 23298-0234.
