I worked as a staff R.N. under Dr. Plunkett at both Norfolk General Hospital and Leigh Memorial from 1970 until 1987. Emergency medicine was in its infancy. Waiting rooms were crowded. Ambulance drivers would dump their patients on a stretcher in our two bed trauma room. The nurse covering the trauma room would holler "doctor to the trauma room" and Dr. Plunkett (when he was on duty) would drop everything he was doing and speed into the trauma suite. Dr. Plunkett was a mentor to many aspiring EMTs and paramedics. Every contact with him was a learning experience. He always had time to answer questions and instruct us on how to do it better the next time. EMS in Virginia is a nationwide example of excellence due to him.
