Harry lived all 95 years of his life in Barrington, NJ. He was born in 1926 at Happ's Hospital, located at 115 Reading Avenue. He attended Barrington Public Schools, Haddon Heights High School and, after WWII, Temple University under the GI Bill.
During WWII, Harry enlisted in the US Marine Corps where he served in the Pacific. He was honorably discharged on May 17, 1946. He met the love of his life, Dot Daniels, at her family’s local ice cream shop, Daniels’ Sweet Shop. It was there that she made him the best ice cream sodas, and he quickly fell in love with her. They were married in 1950 and raised 4 daughters.
Harry spent many years in public service. He was employed by the Barrington Post Office in 1947 and rose to become the Postmaster for 7 years before retiring in 1981. He served 37 years as a volunteer fireman, Assistant Fire Chief, and Fire Chief for 11 years, living through some very harrowing experiences. In 1967, he was selected as the Outstanding Citizen of the Year.
After his retirement, he golfed every day for 4 years, unless there was snow or if the temperature was below 40 degrees. He then went to work at various golf courses for 4 more years. He was still golfing at the age of 89, and especially enjoyed golfing with his 4 daughters. At the age of 86, he was happy to have finally achieved the elusive "hole in one" on hole #4 at Frog Rock Golf Course.
Harry hoped to change Barrington politics and won election as a councilman in 1986, serving 2 years before being elected to two 4 year terms as Mayor. While Mayor, Harry served as President of the Camden County Mayors Association and, at the same time, President of the Camden County Block Grant. During his term as Mayor, he was proud to receive, from the State of NJ, full funding to eliminate flooding on Tavistock Blvd and at Lott & Richards Avenues. He also helped secure a builder to construct the Barrington Mews which, to this day, still provides senior citizen housing in Barrington. In addition, he kept his promise to improve the intersection of Clements Bridge Road and Gloucester Pike. He often shared that “the best thing about being Mayor is the ability to marry people.” He did, in fact, perform 96 marriages all over NJ.
Harry became a charter member of the Barrington VFW Post 7247 in 1946. That is the year his father, a WWI veteran, founded the post. Harry was instrumental in building the post’s home on Shreve Avenue and served in many officer positions, including Commander.
Back when the Barrington Little League was young, Harry served as an umpire and also did the same for the Girls Softball League. As you can see, whenever Harry was asked to serve, he was there.
He will be dearly missed by his loving family. The family would like to sincerely thank Samaritan Hospice, both home and in-house care, for their loving and compassionate care of their Dad.
Harry's funeral service and interment will be private at the convenience of the family.
In lieu of flowers, you can honor Harry by donating to a Veteran’s cause, giving back to your community, saluting the US Flag, or remembering him as you play a round of golf. Semper Fi, Harry!!
